Unit 1 · Multidisciplinary nature; definition, scope and awareness; need for public awareness
This unit binds three things: the multidisciplinary nature of environmental studies; definition, scope and awareness; and the need for public awareness. Forest, pollution and law come later; here is the door of the subject.
1 Multidisciplinary nature
Multidisciplinary means the subject is built from many disciplines, not from one. Break the word: multi = many; disciplinary = of a branch of knowledge. Environmental studies is not a closed science like a single laboratory subject. A river that dies is at once a chemical problem (what is in the water), a biological problem (what fish and plants remain), a geological problem (silt, banks, groundwater), an economic problem (who drinks, who irrigates, who dumps), a legal problem (who is allowed to dump), and a health problem (who falls ill). One specialist sees one face. The paper asks you to see the whole.
That is why the official line is “the multidisciplinary nature of environmental studies,” not “a list of other B.A. subjects.” Nature here means character. The character of this study is that it must borrow tools. Physics and chemistry explain energy, matter, and pollutants. Botany and zoology explain plants, animals and microbes. Geology and geography explain land, soil, climate and maps. Hydrology and atmospheric science explain water and air. Sociology and anthropology explain how communities use land and custom. Economics explains cost, scarcity and “who pays.” Political science and law explain policy and the statutes you will meet in Unit 6. Engineering and technology explain control of waste, energy and industry. Medicine and public health explain disease. Agriculture explains food, soil and pesticide. Ethics asks what we ought to leave for the next generation. Statistics counts so that a claim is not only a feeling.
Two distinctions matter. Environmental studies is not the same as ecology. Ecology is one necessary branch; it is not the building. And “multidisciplinary” does not mean “the environment has many parts” (air, water, soil). Many parts is the definition of environment. Many subjects used to study those parts is multidisciplinary nature.
Because many branches sit together, the student of this paper is not asked to become a chemist or a lawyer. You are asked to know that those doors exist, what each door is for, and why a public decision that ignores one door fails. A factory that treats only the legal licence and not the river chemistry has not done environmental studies. A campaign that loves trees and cannot name why the soil under them dies has not done it either.
