Suggestive markers on the official PDF. MCQ via Google Form: questions from all five units, set as a quiz for instant feedback, testing understanding, application and analysis of communication principles plus listening, speaking, reading and writing. Project (one of): interview-based research — interviews in person or online, findings in a 500–800 word report; or a short audio/video (news report, commentary, or skit) that integrates all four skills; or a report on a local event, written in detail and presented orally in class.

These notes walk Units I–V in lesson order so that an MCQ, a class presentation, and a project paragraph can be taken from the same page. Official paper: Communication Skills, Board of Studies in English, Maharaja Ganga Singh University, 2025–26.

Unit I · Orientation

This unit is the door of the paper. The official heading is Orientation: importance and purpose of communication; types (verbal, non-verbal, digital); essentials of communication; barriers and strategies to overcome them. Listening, speaking, reading and writing sit in Units II–V. Here you must be able to define communication, walk the process, name why it matters, sort a message by type, list the 7 Cs, and match a barrier to a repair.

Classroom lines follow the official Suggestive Readings: Gill Hasson, Brilliant Communication Skills (Pearson Life, 2011); Sanjay Kumar and Pushpalata, Communication Skills (Oxford Press, 2011); David Crystal, A Little Book of Language (Orient Blackswan, 2010); Richard Denny, Communicate to Win (Kogan Page India, 2009); Owen Hargie, The Handbook of Communication Skills, 3rd ed. (Routledge, 2006); Richard Ellis, Communication Skills: Stepladders to Success for the Professional (Intellect, 2020); and Effective Communication Skills (Arnold Woolf, 2024).

Pushpalata, Communication Skills (Oxford Press, 2011); Crystal, A Little Book of Language (2010); Denny, Communicate to Win (2009); Hargie, The Handbook of Communication Skills (2006); Ellis, Communication Skills (2020); तथा Woolf (2024)।

1 What communication names

Communication is the two-way process of sharing information, ideas, feelings and meaning so that the other person can understand and, if needed, reply. Kumar and Pushpalata treat it as a circular activity, not a one-way dump: a message is sent, received, interpreted, and answered. Hasson’s classroom line is simpler still: communication is how people connect. Hargie treats it as a skill — something practised, not a talent you either have or lack. Crystal reminds you that the tool of that skill is language (speech, writing, and now the screen), but a look, a silence, or a late reply is communication too.

Two cheap substitutes must be refused on this paper. Communication is not the same as information: a notice on a wall is information; communication begins when someone reads it and can act, or ask. It is not the same as talking a lot: Denny’s point in Communicate to Win is that the speaker who never checks the listener has not won the exchange. Kumar’s picture: sender and receiver share a code; without a shared code there is noise, not meaning.

A usable definition: communication is a two-way, purposeful exchange of meaning through a chosen channel, completed by feedback. Example: a teacher explaining this unit; a student asking for a day-pass; a WhatsApp confirming the bus time. Listening, speaking, reading and writing — Units II–V — are the four doors of the same house. This unit names the house.
