Write a note on hybridity with Bhabha’s third space, Soyinka, and Tan.
Or: Write a note on multiculturalism with Tan, Cofer and Angelou.
Model answer
Hybridity is mixing that makes a third form — of language, identity, ritual or genre — rather than a pure return to origin. Homi K. Bhabha takes the biological word into culture: the colony never simply copies the colonizer. The copy is slanted; it talks back. That in-between is his third space. Mimicry is the almost-the-same that is not quite: the English-educated subject who wears the master’s speech and disturbs it.
Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel is the drama of this mixing. Ilujinle already holds a school, a road and a magazine camera. Lakunle’s book-English, Baroka’s cunning, and Sidi between magazine fame and village power share one afternoon. Baroka bribed to keep the railway off the village; at night a stamp machine is bait. Yoruba dance and English sentences are one form, not two pure blocks of West and tradition. Lakunle’s progress is costume; the lion’s body is still a fact.
Tan’s “Mother Tongue” is hybrid at sentence level: public grammar and the mother’s music in one essay. Two Englishes inhabit one life. Bhabha’s third space, Soyinka’s stage, and Tan’s two tongues are that third form: mixing that stays visible. Sidi between magazine fame and village power is that third form in one body.
The Lion and the Jewel

Multiculturalism is the claim that one country, city or classroom can hold several cultures, languages and religions with equal public respect. It is a salad bowl, not a melt. Canada made it official policy in 1971; Charles Taylor’s politics of recognition says a culture is damaged when the state pretends it is invisible. Groups stay audible beside one another.
Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” keeps two Englishes in one American family: the mother’s Chinese-inflected speech, vivid for household business, and the public English of school and the writer’s page. A stockbroker will not listen; a hospital delays a CAT scan; the adult essay still claims both tongues as English. Judith Ortiz Cofer’s “Latin Women Pray” seats Margarita, Josefina, Maria and Isabel before an Anglo God with a Jewish heritage; they pray in Spanish and hope that if he is not omnipotent he may at least be bilingual. Two languages share a pew; the statue stays one colour.
Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” insists that a Black woman’s body and voice belong in the same nation that tried to shrink them. Hybridity is a new mixed self; multiculturalism is more than one script still heard. Tan, Cofer and Angelou keep more than one script audible.

Reference. These are the opening lines of Agha Shahid Ali’s “Postcard from Kashmir,” in The Beloved Witness (Viking Penguin, 1992). Ali (1949–2001) is the Kashmiri American poet. The lyric is diaspora: scatter, memory, incomplete presence; displacement is the forced side of the same map.
Context. A postcard has arrived. Home becomes a neat rectangle. He always loved neatness; now the half-inch Himalayas sit in the hand. The centre of the poem is the claim: “This is home. And this the closest / I’ll ever be to home.” The close is photographic: when he returns, colours will not be so brilliant, the Jhelum not so ultramarine; love will be overexposed; memory a giant negative, still undeveloped. The card is the only scale at which home will stay still.
Explanation. Shrinkage is the conceit: a country reduced to mail, mountains to a half-inch. Distance is a Kashmiri life written from elsewhere — Safran’s scatter, memory, incomplete presence; Hall’s identity looking both ways. Return will not restore the picture; the negative stays undeveloped. The mailbox is the only home that will sit still. Displacement is the hand holding mountains that will not be walked. The lyric is the four-by-six scale, the ultramarine Jhelum, and the undeveloped negative.
ये Agha Shahid Ali की “Postcard from Kashmir” की आरंभिक पंक्तियाँ हैं, The Beloved Witness (1992)।

Reference. These are the opening lines of Seamus Heaney’s “Blackberry-Picking,” printed in Death of a Naturalist (Faber, 1966). Heaney (1939–2013) is the Irish Nobel poet. The lyric is a County Derry farm memory of childhood.
Context. Late summer after the War. The first movement is lust of eye and mouth: green berries redden and blacken; juice like thickened wine; hunger sends the children out with milk-cans, pea-tins and jam-pots; palms sticky, thorns in the skin; caches in wet grass; neighbour children. The second movement stores the hoard in the byre — a cow-shed. A rat-grey fungus, a stink, juice turning to vinegar. The child hoped they would keep. They never did. Every year the hope returns.
Explanation. The two lines name season, weather and the promise that will not last. Rain and sun together make the fruit; the same world will make the rot. Innocence is a palate that has not yet learned that hunger and decay share one fruit. The speaker’s weather is a quiet alienation: he is estranged from his own hope. Heaney’s nature is farm work and disappointment. The byre, the fungus and the yearly return of hope finish the lyric. The stockbroker phone and the delayed CAT scan are the public cost of that contact.
ये Seamus Heaney की “Blackberry-Picking” की आरंभिक पंक्तियाँ हैं, Death of a Naturalist (1966)।

Reference. Orhan Pamuk’s “Distant Relations” is the episode printed in The New Yorker of 7 September 2009: chapter 3 of The Museum of Innocence, translated by Maureen Freely. Pamuk (b. 1952) is the Turkish Nobel novelist.
Context. 27 April 1975, Valikonağı Avenue, Istanbul. Kemal walks with Sibel, his fiancée of the same Westernised bourgeoisie — she has studied in Paris, he in America. She spots a Jenny Colon purse. The next day, behind the counter, Füsun, eighteen, a distant relative, studying for university, helping in the shop. He buys the bag, boasts at dinner; Sibel sees at once that it is fake. He returns it. Füsun is dismayed, not a real employee, afraid of the owner-relative. She will refund him if he names a place to bring the money. He names a place that can undo engagement, class and the life already planned.
Explanation. Class and kinship do the work. Füsun’s mother Nesibe had been close to Kemal’s mother until a beauty pageant branded the girl; poverty is the “distant” in distant relations. The designer bag is a language of Europe in the window; family shame sits in the back room. Hybridity is that city. Identity crisis is desire arriving from the wrong shelf of the family tree. The shop, the fake, Füsun’s tears, and the address he names are the episode.
Orhan Pamuk की “Distant Relations” निर्धारित अंश है, The New Yorker 7 सितंबर 2009: The Museum of Innocence का अध्याय 3, Maureen Freely।

Reference. Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” was first printed in The Threepenny Review 34 (1988). Tan (b. 1952) is the Chinese American novelist. The piece is a lecture-essay about the Englishes she grew up inside.
Context. The mother speaks a Chinese-inflected English that family members hear as exact and vivid. Clerks, a stockbroker and hospital staff hear it as noise. The daughter, schooled in SAT English, once translated on the phone and felt the mother’s limits as her own embarrassment. Later she claims that “limited” English as the language of intimacy and as the music of her fiction. The public page and the kitchen table are one writer’s two instruments.
Explanation. The contrast is two Englishes in one life. Family hears the mother’s speech as exact; the public ear hears noise, so a stockbroker will not listen and a hospital delays a CAT scan. Acculturation is the daughter moving through school English while the mother keeps heritage speech. The adult writer claims the home tongue as intimacy and as craft. Identity is the daughter who will not disown the mother. The stockbroker phone and the CAT-scan delay are the two public proofs of that cost. The mother’s English is vivid speech; the essay claims it as craft.
Amy Tan की “Mother Tongue” The Threepenny Review 34 (1988) में पहली बार छपी।

Or: Write a note on guilt, ethnicity and diaspora in The Kite Runner.

Model answer
Soyinka’s comedy is three movements — Morning, Noon, Night — in a Yoruba village already crossed by school, road and magazine. Lakunle’s modernity is half-learned mimicry (Bhabha): he wants Sidi without bride-price, recites progress, misuses long words, talks of the Lagos train. He is comic, not heroic. Baroka’s custom is live power. He bribed to keep the railway off Ilujinle so that power stayed local; at noon he wrestles a younger man and throws him; the lion’s body is still a fact. Sadiku, sent to court Sidi, later dances because she believes the Bale has confessed impotence — theatre. Night: Sidi goes to mock the fallen lion; the stamp machine and talk of stillness are bait; he seduces her. Magazine fame is also a trap.
She returns no longer a maiden. Lakunle, who had said he would still take her, now offers a marriage that would skip bride-price because she is “spoiled”; that is another insult. She marries Baroka. The village drums. Progress, as Lakunle named it, has not won the jewel. After the night, the honour-path the village recognises is marriage to the Bale; she turns a trap into status as his latest wife. Print culture has entered an oral town; language is costume; the female body is prize and agent at once. Sidi’s marriage follows village honour after that night.
Hybridity is the whole stage: Yoruba dance and English sentences in one afternoon. Ilujinle keeps the school and the Bale. Soyinka laughs at a schoolmaster who cannot see the lion in front of him. Sadiku dancing too soon is the warning: the first story the lion tells is bait.

Hosseini’s novel is a first-person debt. The opening already knows the ending: a phone call will name “a way to be good again.” The Kabul childhood is household fact. Amir is Pashtun, bookish, Baba’s legitimate son; Hassan is Hazara, illiterate, kite runner, harelip, servant’s child, and — the late secret — Baba’s other son. They share Rostam and Sohrab and a pomegranate tree that calls them sultans of Kabul. Assef’s “Afghanistan for Pashtuns,” brass knuckles in the street, is the city’s fascism in a boy. Ethnicity is the courtyard, not colour on a map.
The alley is the crime the rest of the book pays for. Hassan will not give up the last kite; Assef rapes him; Amir watches and does not step in. Shame then frames Hassan with money and a watch so that Ali and Hassan leave. Displacement follows: collapsing Kabul, Pakistan, Fremont. Baba’s class drop — gas station, flea market, cancer in a strange hospital — is diaspora as labour. Amir writes and marries Soraya; acculturation is the American room; assimilation is the wish to be only a novelist; the alley will not melt. Rahim Khan’s call, Hassan’s death, Sohrab in Assef’s Taliban grip, the fight, the stalled adoption, the suicide attempt: return is not a certificate. In a California park the old phrase returns: “For you, a thousand times over.” Being good again is a practice.
The plot therefore runs from the alley through California to Sohrab. Pashtun and Hazara name the courtyard. Identity crisis is Amir’s whole story: son, friend, betrayer, refugee, writer, Afghan with unpaid debt. Hybridity is the American writer who still speaks Kabul. The last kite is work.
पार्क में पुराना वाक्य: “For you, a thousand times over।”

Write a note on Shiva’s chapters 2 and 4 as one ecofeminist argument.
Or: Write a note on Dharwadker’s thesis: Indian writing in English is not solely a colonial product.
Model answer
Chapter 2 and chapter 4 are one argument: reductionist science becomes masculinist forestry. Ecofeminism holds that the domination of women and of nature follow one logic. d’Eaubonne coined the word in 1974. Shiva’s Staying Alive (1988) is the Indian voice of that join; ecofeminism is the joint domination.
Chapter 2, “Science, Nature and Gender,” attacks the myth that modern science is neutral and universal. Baconian method and industrial development treat nature as female matter to be interrogated and used. Women, like forests and rivers, become resource. Reductionism breaks living systems into parts so a part can be owned, measured and sold. Two facts, two rationalities: the laboratory’s isolated unit versus the peasant woman’s knowledge of a whole field. Prakriti is living nature, not dead stock. Maldevelopment is growth that kills the feminine principle of regeneration.
Chapter 4, “Women in the Forest,” reads the forest as Aranyani, diversity as a feminine principle, then tracks colonial and “scientific” forestry: timber, revenue, the uniform miracle tree — pine, eucalyptus, teak — in place of mixed oak and commons renamed wasteland. Women’s knowledge of fodder, fuel and soil did not count as fact. Chipko is the example: March 1974, Reni, Chamoli, Gaura Devi, women holding trunks. That is counter-science: mixed Himalayan forest feeds a household; a plantation does not. Recovering the forest means recovering diversity and the commons, not breeding super-trees. The argument therefore moves from Aranyani through the forest department to Reni in 1974, diversity against the miracle tree, both chapters one joint domination.

Dharwadker’s essay, Sections I, II and IV, is a history with a thesis. Section I refuses the myth that Indian-English literature begins with Macaulay (1835). Dean Mahomet’s Travels (Cork, 1794) is the first English book by an Indian-origin author. A Patna-born camp-follower gained English, literacy and European manners before he left India by contact, literacy and acculturation — acculturation as a historical process. He is a composite: Mughal service world, Company army, friendship with Godfrey Evan Baker from age eleven, Ireland 1784, school, marriage to Jane Daly, conversion. He writes inside the English travelogue form and turns it: an Indian understanding of India as polite counter-discourse. The first Indian English book is already a counter-text.
Section II puts English on Indian soil in 1579, two decades before the Company. Stephens the Jesuit, Hakluyt 1589, Fitch the merchant, a small jailed community at Goa, then after about 1660 a stable coastal English-speaking factory world — 175 years before colonial English schools. Missionary and merchant are the two agent-types. Between the 1580s and 1780s the British archive grows in letter, eyewitness epistle and formal travel narrative — the genres Mahomet will inhabit and bend. Four zones of contact explain leakage before government schools: employment (dubhashis, army), marriage (Derozio’s mixed parentage), conversion (missions banned until 1813), friendship (Baker; Roy and the Unitarians). They run on prior Indian multilingualism. They fail where that literacy is absent.
Section IV seats three first writers. C. V. Boriah, Telugu Vaishnava brahman, dubhashi to Colin Mackenzie, “Account of the Jains” (c. 1803, printed 1809), already multilingual. Rammohun Roy: Persian and Sanskrit first; Company revenue; English on the job with John Digby; from 1815 a reformer in several languages — Upanishads, sati debates, Precepts of Jesus. All three write instrumental prose with literary control; all enter English from outside full colonial schooling. Indian writing in English grows from precolonial and noncolonial multilingualism already leaking through the first texts.
Boriah, तेलुगु वैष्णव, Mackenzie के dubhashi, “Account of the Jains।”

Q. 1 (20 marks) · Unit 1
Discuss the nine Unit 1 concepts with reference to the texts prescribed on this paper.
Model answer
Unit 1 prints one heading: Introducing Multiculturalism, Diaspora, Globalization, Hybridity, Alienation, Acculturation, Assimilation, Identity, Ecofeminism. These nine words are the tools used to read writing after the Second World War. Each names a different structure, and each sits on a prescribed text.
Multiculturalism is several cultures sharing one public space with equal respect, a salad bowl, not a melt. Tan’s two Englishes, Cofer’s Spanish pew before an Anglo God, Angelou’s insistence that a Black woman’s rising belongs in the same nation that tried to shrink her — these keep more than one script audible. Hybridity is mixing that makes a third form. Bhabha’s third space and mimicry name the slanted copy that talks back. Soyinka’s Ilujinle already holds a school, a road and a magazine camera; Lakunle’s book-English and Baroka’s cunning share one afternoon as that third form. Tan’s sentence that holds public grammar and the mother’s music is hybrid at the level of the line. Globalization is the thickening of worldwide ties — Appadurai’s ethnoscapes, mediascapes, technoscapes, financescapes, ideoscapes. Murakami’s Tokyo wish, Márquez’s drowned outsider, Neruda and Szymborska beside Heaney and Angelou, Hosseini’s Afghan memory in American English: the syllabus itself is a small ethnoscape. Dharwadker’s reminder is that English was a vehicle in India long before this contemporary list.
Diaspora is community scatter plus homeland memory plus incomplete belonging. Ali’s four-by-six Kashmir is the lyric; Hosseini’s Kabul-to-Fremont is the novel; Lim’s father’s sadness inherited in a daughter’s dream is the family inside the scatter. Displacement is the forced door: Amir and Baba leave because Kabul is no longer livable. Alienation is a different chill. A person can be alienated at home — Naheed’s private voice because the public room has no ear; Heaney’s child estranged from hope when the berries rot; Neruda a little dead beside a rusted machine; Murakami’s anonymous city; Szymborska’s one mind that cannot hold four billion. Exile is a legal fact; alienation is a relation of feeling and structure.
Acculturation is contact and change, Berry’s four paths under one umbrella. Assimilation is one path: heritage dropped, host taken. Tan’s late respect for the mother’s tongue is a turn from melting toward integration. Baba’s gas-station labour is acculturation; Amir’s wish to be only a Californian writer is the assimilative temptation the plot refuses. Lakunle’s sneer at bride-price is mimicry without a finished modern self. Identity, in Hall’s sentence, is produced in narrative. Angelou rises against a history that named Black women as less. Naheed makes a woman’s self in a private address. Amir’s whole plot is identity crisis: son, friend, betrayer, refugee, American writer, Afghan with an unpaid debt. Sidi is jewel, magazine cover, wife — names that do not match. Márquez’s village names the drowned man Esteban and is changed by the name it chose. Subramaniam’s “Home” treats belonging as a question about the body, not a flag on a map.
Ecofeminism joins the domination of women and of nature. d’Eaubonne coined the word in 1974; Shiva’s Staying Alive, chapters 2 and 4, is the Indian voice: reductionist science is not neutral; Chipko at Reni in 1974, Gaura Devi, is women’s knowledge against the “miracle” tree.
Q. 2 (20 marks) · Unit 2
Discuss the nine lyrics of Unit 2 through identity, diaspora and alienation.
Model answer
Unit 2 sets nine lyrics: Heaney, “Blackberry-Picking”; Naheed, “Talking to Myself”; Cofer, “Latin Women Pray”; Subramaniam, “Home”; Lim, “My Father’s Sadness”; Neruda, “A Dog Has Died”; Szymborska, “A Great Number”; Angelou, “Still I Rise”; Ali, “Postcard from Kashmir.” Grouped on three Unit 1 words — identity, diaspora, alienation — each lyric keeps a concrete object: berries, a command to punish, a pew, a body, a father’s dream, a grave in a garden, four billion, a rising, a card.
Identity is the name-struggle. Angelou’s “you” has written her down with twisted lies and trod her in the dirt; she rises like dust, moons, tides; the last claim is that she is the dream and the hope of the slave. That is identity spoken against a history that named Black women as less. Naheed’s identity is made in a private voice because the public script is too small; “Punish me” is irony, the crime literacy and a torch against the wind. Cofer’s Latin women keep a group name in an American church whose God has been pictured as someone else’s face; the last hope, a bilingual God, is the smallest recognition. Subramaniam refuses ownership as a way of staying alive in a room: a home like this body, alien when she belongs, hospitable when she visits. Belonging here is flesh and furniture, not a missing house on a map.
Diaspora is scatter plus homeland memory plus incomplete belonging. Ali is the clearest: Kashmir as four-by-six inches, the closest he will ever be, the undeveloped negative. Lim carries a Chinese-Malaysian father’s sadness into the daughter’s dreams: a young body dying of responsibility, clay crumbling in an hour-glass, a mangrove netted by lianas, a host perishing of its own lavishness. The scatter sits inside the family, not only at passport control. Subramaniam’s homelessness is inward: a body as guest-house, not a valley held as a card.
Alienation is the chill of not fitting, even at home. Heaney’s child learns rot in the byre; hope returns yearly and is estranged from itself. Neruda buries a dog beside a rusted machine; the dog did not fawn; he looked at the man with the independence of his own being; after the burial the speaker is a little dead — companionship was eye-to-eye, not ownership. Szymborska sets four billion against one imagination still moved by a particular face; a flashlight picks random faces; she chooses by discarding; a little poem costs indescribable losses; an empty house grows annexes of echo, extra rooms of echo. Globalization here is those four billion; alienation is the one life that cannot hold them. Naheed talking to herself is alienation as gendered silencing. Heaney’s farm and Neruda’s garden have not left a country; alienation and diaspora remain two words.
Taken together the nine lyrics map three Unit 1 words onto nine objects. Angelou, Naheed, Cofer and Subramaniam name a self against a shrinking public script. Ali and Lim hold a homeland that will not sit still except as image or inherited dream. Heaney, Neruda and Szymborska keep the chill of not fitting even when the body has not crossed a border. Naheed talking to herself sits in both identity and alienation.
Q. 3 (20 marks) · Unit 3
Discuss the four Unit 3 prose texts through language, wish, class and community.
Model answer
Unit 3 sets four prose pieces: Tan, “Mother Tongue”; Pamuk, “Distant Relations”; Murakami, “Birthday Girl”; Márquez, “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World.” Language, wish, class and community hold the four texts together.
Tan’s essay is two Englishes in one American life. The mother’s Chinese-inflected speech is exact for family business and costly in public. A stockbroker will not take her seriously on the phone, so the daughter must speak. Hospital staff are slow to order a CAT scan. School and SAT English once produced shame in the daughter. The adult writer reverses that shame and treats the home tongue as the music of her fiction. Acculturation is this contact of tongues. Assimilation would have melted the mother’s speech; the essay keeps it. Hybridity is public grammar and kitchen music in one lecture. Multiculturalism is the claim that both count as English. Identity is the daughter who will not disown the mother.
Pamuk’s episode is 27 April 1975, Valikonağı Avenue, Istanbul, the New Yorker chapter of The Museum of Innocence. Kemal walks with Sibel, his fiancée of the same Westernised bourgeoisie — Paris and America already in their manners. She wants a Jenny Colon purse. The next day Füsun, eighteen, a distant relative, stands behind the counter, studying for university. He buys the bag and boasts; Sibel sees at once that it is fake. He returns it. Füsun is dismayed, not a real employee, afraid of the owner-relative. She will refund him if he names a place. He names an address that can undo engagement, class and the life already planned. Füsun’s mother Nesibe had been close to Kemal’s mother until a beauty pageant branded the girl; poverty is the “distant” in distant relations. The designer bag is Europe in the window; family shame sits in the back room. Hybridity is that city. Identity crisis is desire from the wrong shelf of the family tree. Class is the whole shop.
Murakami’s “Birthday Girl” is an urban fairy tale without a moral tag. Years later a woman tells the story of her twentieth birthday. She works a shift in a restaurant; the owner, an old woman downstairs, offers one wish. The story never names the wish. The teller is now an ordinary adult, still unsure what was asked. Alienation is the job and the anonymous city. Identity crisis is a hinge that stays unnamed. The withheld sentence is the point of the tale: a life can turn on a wish and still refuse to say the words.
Márquez works the opposite direction. A drowned outsider washes into a village. The women sew clothes that fit a body they have imagined; they name him Esteban. The men first resist, then yield; the village beautifies itself for a man who never spoke. Houses will have wider doors; flowers will be planted so Esteban would not have been ashamed. Magic realism keeps corpse and street on one plane: the extraordinary is told as village fact. Identity here is communal. The stranger is given a name, a family, a future of building. The body arrives from elsewhere; the village answers by making him theirs.
Tan and Pamuk give language and class as two Englishes and a fake bag with a dangerous address. Murakami and Márquez test what a single speaker will not narrate, and what a community will. Language, wish, class, name: four ways these prose texts hold a contemporary world.
इकाई 3 चार गद्य: Tan, “Mother Tongue”; Pamuk, “Distant Relations”; Murakami, “Birthday Girl”; Márquez, “The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World।”
Pamuk का अंश 27 अप्रैल 1975, Valikonağı Avenue, इस्तांबुल, The Museum of Innocence का New Yorker अध्याय।
Q. 4 (20 marks) · Unit 4
Discuss The Lion and the Jewel as a play of hybridity and mimicry.
The Lion and the Jewel
Model answer
Wole Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel (first performed 1959; Oxford text 1963) is the prescribed drama of Unit 4. The three movements — Morning, Noon, Night — in Ilujinle stage Unit 1 hybridity: mixing that makes a third form, Bhabha’s third space, mimicry as the almost-the-same that is not quite. The village is already crossed by a school, a road and a magazine camera. Yoruba dance and English sentences share one afternoon. Soyinka laughs at a schoolmaster who cannot see the lion in front of him; the lion is live power, not a museum piece.
Morning sets the triangle. Sidi, the village belle, has had her photograph printed; she is the jewel and she tastes a new vanity. Lakunle, the teacher, carries her pail, preaches against bride-price as barbaric, recites book-English, misuses long words, talks of the Lagos train. That is mimicry without wisdom: he wants the woman without paying the custom that names her worth in the town. Baroka, the Bale, the lion, is ageing, cunning, many-wived, and not finished. Lakunle is not Soyinka’s hero. His progress is costume.
Noon shows how custom uses modern tools. Sadiku, the senior wife, is sent to court Sidi; Sidi laughs that the lion is too old. Baroka wrestles a younger man in public and throws him — the body is still a fact. He had already bribed to keep the railway from cutting through Ilujinle, so that his power stayed local: a modern transaction in defence of a local throne. Sadiku later dances, believing he has confessed impotence. That dance is theatre. The lion has fed her a story. Print culture and rumour are both in play. Hybridity here is a wrestle, a bribe, and a lie that looks like confession.
Night is the trap. Sidi goes to Baroka’s house to mock the fallen lion. He shows a stamp machine as if the village could print its own modernity, talks of stillness and change, and seduces her. The comedy is rough: her jewel status, made by a camera, is also a snare. She returns no longer a maiden. Lakunle, who had said he would still take her, now offers marriage that skips bride-price because she is “spoiled” — another insult dressed as kindness. She marries Baroka. The drums. Progress, as Lakunle named it, has not won the jewel. After the night, the honour-path the village recognises is marriage to the Bale; she turns a trap into status as his latest wife. The female body is prize and agent at once.
Ilujinle will keep the school and the Bale. Language remains costume: Lakunle’s English, Baroka’s cunning speech, Sadiku’s too-early dance. The play holds tradition beside borrowed modernity, print in an oral village, and mimicry that has not learned the lion. Morning–Noon–Night, the wrestle, the stamp machine, the railway bribe and the skipped bride-price are the play. Soyinka laughs at the schoolmaster who cannot see the lion. Morning, Noon and Night keep that mixing on the stage until the drums. Ilujinle keeps the school and the Bale together.
Wole Soyinka का The Lion and the Jewel (1959/1963)
Morning, Noon and Night
Q. 5 (20 marks) · Unit 5
Discuss Shiva’s ecofeminism in Staying Alive chapters 2 and 4.
Model answer
Vandana Shiva’s Staying Alive: Women, Ecology and Development (Kali for Women, 1988) is the second Indian voice of Unit 5 and the book for ecofeminism. The prescribed chapters are chapter 2, “Science, Nature and Gender,” and chapter 4, “Women in the Forest.” Françoise d’Eaubonne coined écoféminisme in 1974: the domination of women and the domination of nature follow one logic; both are treated as resource, body, silence. The essay therefore holds that definition, then moves from Aranyani through reductionist science and the colonial forest department to Chipko at Reni in 1974, diversity against the miracle tree.
Chapter 2 attacks the myth that modern science is neutral and universal. Shiva reads Baconian method and industrial development as a patriarchal project. Nature is female matter to be interrogated and used. Women, like forests and rivers, become resource. Reductionism is the method: living systems are broken into parts so that a part can be owned, measured and sold. Two kinds of fact, two kinds of rationality, stand together. The laboratory isolates a unit. The peasant woman knows a whole field — seed, soil, season, fodder — as one living relation. Prakriti names living nature, not dead stock. Maldevelopment is growth that kills the feminine principle of regeneration. This science claims universality while serving profit, and it codes nature and women as the same kind of silence. Ecofeminism is that join of the two dominations; Shiva is the voice of the join.
Chapter 4 gives the join a forest. The forest is Aranyani, the feminine principle of diversity. Colonial and then “scientific” forestry wanted timber, revenue and the uniform miracle tree: pine in the Himalaya, eucalyptus or teak on the plains — one commercial species where mixed oak and village commons had been. Commons were renamed wasteland so that they could be taken. Women’s expertise — fodder, fuel, soil, mixed species — did not count as fact in the plantation ledger. Afforestation that plants one cash species deepens both the ecological crisis and the survival crisis. Recovering the forest means recovering diversity and the commons, not breeding super-trees.
Chipko is the example because it is counter-science. March 1974, Reni village, Chamoli district, Garhwal. Contractors came to fell. Gaura Devi led the village women to the trees; they held the trunks. Chipko means to stick, to cling. Mixed Himalayan forest feeds cattle and binds soil; a pine or eucalyptus plantation does not feed a household. Those who live by the forest know a different ledger from the office that counts cubic feet. Shiva’s argument is forestry, commons and women’s knowledge.
The two chapters are one argument: reductionist science (ch. 2) becomes masculinist forestry (ch. 4). That development model travelling the world is globalization. Joint domination, the 1974 name, Gaura Devi, Aranyani, reductionism, and the miracle tree close the essay. Chapter 2’s laboratory unit becomes chapter 4’s forestry ledger at Reni, where women’s knowledge meets the trunks. Gaura Devi’s cling at Reni is that knowledge standing in the forest. Gaura Devi’s cling at Reni is women’s knowledge in the forest.
निर्धारित अध्याय 2, “Science, Nature and Gender,” और अध्याय 4, “Women in the Forest।”

Distinguish acculturation and assimilation with reference to Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue.”
Or: Write a note on diaspora and displacement with Ali’s postcard and Hosseini’s novel.
Model answer
Acculturation is the umbrella: cultural change after sustained contact between groups. Berry asks two questions — keep heritage? join the host? — and names four paths: integration, assimilation, separation, marginalization. Assimilation is only the second path: “no” to heritage, “yes” to the host, the melting pot. Tan’s “Mother Tongue” shows contact without erasure.
The daughter moves through American school, SAT English and the public page; that is contact with the host. The mother keeps a Chinese-inflected English that stores family knowledge — vivid for household business, scorned by a stockbroker on the phone and slow to be heard in a hospital that needed a CAT scan. Young Tan was ashamed of that “broken” tongue and wanted it to sound “normal”: that shame is assimilative pressure. The mature essay refuses the shame. The mother’s speech becomes the language of intimacy and of the writer’s craft. Two Englishes inhabit one life. That is closer to integration than to melting.
Tan’s late respect for the home tongue is acculturation that keeps heritage speech; assimilation would have melted that speech away. The stockbroker phone and the delayed CAT scan are the public cost of that contact. The adult essay claims both tongues as English.

Diaspora is a community’s long scatter from a remembered homeland, with memory, incomplete belonging in the host country, and often a myth of return. Displacement is the forced or painful side of the same map: people leave because a place is no longer livable. Stuart Hall’s point is that identity is then made looking both ways. Exile is often one person’s political ban.
Ali’s “Postcard from Kashmir” is the lyric of the term. Kashmir shrinks into a mailbox; home is a neat four-by-six inches; the half-inch Himalayas sit in the hand. “This is home. And this the closest / I’ll ever be to home.” Return will not restore the ultramarine Jhelum; love will be overexposed; memory stays a giant negative, still undeveloped. The postcard is the only scale at which home will stay still. Displacement is the hand holding mountains that will not be walked.
Hosseini’s The Kite Runner is diaspora as plot. Amir and Baba leave a collapsing Kabul for Pakistan and Fremont; Baba, once a great man of the city, works a gas station and a flea market; Amir writes, marries Soraya, still dreams the alley. Fremont is incomplete belonging: American rooms, Afghan memory. The America chapters are the long middle in which guilt learns English. Rahim Khan’s call sends Amir back into danger: scatter still has a door.

Reference. These lines open Kishwar Naheed’s “Talking to Myself,” in Rukhsana Ahmad’s English in We Sinful Women (The Women’s Press, 1991). Naheed (b. 1940, Bulandshahr; family to Lahore in 1949) is an Urdu feminist poet.
Context. The lyric is an interior address that keeps one command: “Punish me.” After the dream written in blood come the pen’s power, a “crucifix of hatred,” womanhood freed from a deluded night. Punishment is asked because if she lives the addressee may lose honour (izzat / face); if her sons raise their hands, that power ends. The last turn: punish me, for then the sentence of your punishment will itself end. The “you” is patriarchal authority, unspoken as a public ear.
Explanation. Talking to herself is what a woman does when the public room has no ear — alienation and identity together. The refrain is irony: the crime is literacy, future-dream, the torch that burns against the wind. Blood as ink makes the book a body; obsession is a public refusal, not a private illness. Patriarchy sentences; the poem outlives the sentence. The opening command walks through the sons and ends when the sentence of punishment itself ends. The stockbroker phone and the delayed CAT scan are the public cost of that contact.
ये Kishwar Naheed की “Talking to Myself” की आरंभिक पंक्तियाँ हैं, Ahmad के अंग्रेज़ी रूपांतर We Sinful Women (1991) में।

Discuss guilt and atonement in The Kite Runner.
The Kite Runner
Model answer
Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner (Riverhead, 2003) is the prescribed novel of Unit 4. The engine is guilt and the unpaid attempt to be good again. The first sentence already knows the last movement: years later a phone call will name “a way to be good again.” Between those poles sit a Kabul courtyard, an alley, a Californian gas station, and a second kite in a park. Identity crisis is Amir’s whole plot: son, friend, betrayer, refugee, American writer, Afghan with a debt. Diaspora here is war, class drop, and a door that still opens back into danger.
The household comes before the crime. Amir, Pashtun, lives in Wazir Akbar Khan as Baba’s bookish son. Hassan, Hazara, son of the servant Ali, is the finest kite runner, marked by a harelip Baba pays to repair, unable to read, sometimes tricked when Amir recites Rostam and Sohrab. They carve “Amir and Hassan, the sultans of Kabul” into a pomegranate tree. Rahim Khan is the kinder father-voice. Assef, brass knuckles, “Afghanistan for Pashtuns,” is the street’s fascism. Ethnicity is not background colour. Servant and master, Hazara and Pashtun, already split the self before anyone leaves the country. The later secret — Hassan is Baba’s son, Amir’s half-brother — explains the uneven love and turns the childhood romance of sultans into a Rostam–Sohrab irony the boys could not read.
The tournament and the alley are the crime. Amir’s kite wins; Hassan runs the last kite and will not yield it. Assef rapes Hassan; Amir watches from hiding and does not step in. That non-step is the novel’s moral centre. Shame then makes him cruel: stolen money and a watch frame Hassan; Ali and Hassan leave. Displacement follows as history: a collapsing Kabul, Pakistan, Fremont. Baba, no longer a great man of the city, works a gas station and a flea market, dies of cancer in a strange hospital. Amir writes, marries Soraya, daughter of General Taheri, who hears the truth. Acculturation is this American labour. Assimilation is the temptation to become only a Californian novelist. The alley will not melt. Guilt has learned English; it has not paid.
Rahim Khan’s call is the plot’s hinge. Hassan is dead; the Taliban have wrecked the old house; Sohrab, Hassan’s son, is in Kabul. Amir returns into Assef’s power — the child rapist now an enforcer — fights, is beaten, gets the boy out. An American adoption stalls; Sohrab attempts suicide; the close is not a healed family photograph. In a California park Amir runs a kite for Sohrab and speaks Hassan’s phrase: “For you, a thousand times over.” Being good again is a practice, a second running, not a certificate that wipes the first watching. Hybridity is the American writer who still speaks Kabul.
The shape of the novel is the alley, then California, then Sohrab. Pashtun and Hazara name the courtyard; Baba’s split love names the secret; the last kite names atonement as work. Amir’s debt, Hassan’s loyalty, Sohrab’s damaged second chance, and the phrase that returns: that is guilt and atonement in the novel.
पार्क में अमीर पतंग दौड़ाता है: “For you, a thousand times over।”
Q. 5 (20 marks) · Unit 5
Discuss Dharwadker’s early history of English in India (Sections I, II, IV).
Model answer
Vinay Dharwadker’s “English in India and Indian Literature in English: The Early History, 1579–1834,” Comparative Literature Studies 39.2 (2002): 93–119, is the first Indian critical voice of Unit 5. The prescribed sections are I, II and IV. Four zones of contact still explain how English leaked before government schools. The thesis is this: Indian writing in English grows from precolonial and noncolonial multilingualism already leaking through the first texts — contact, literacy and acculturation before Macaulay’s schools.
Section I locates the field against a schoolroom myth. Indian-English literature does not begin with Macaulay’s Minute (1835) or with a sudden gift of the Raj. The first English book by an author of Indian origin is Din Muhammad (Dean Mahomet), The Travels of Dean Mahomet, Cork, 1794: an epistolary travel book by a Patna-born man who had served the Company’s army, emigrated to Ireland, married Jane Daly, and wrote for Anglo-Irish subscribers. He gained English, literacy and European manners before he left India. Three conditions when a people write in a historically alien language: contact with native users of that language; literacy in it; acculturation to the ways of life it carries. Acculturation is here a historical process. Mahomet is a composite of Mughal service elite, Company army, interracial marriage and the social history of English on the subcontinent. He writes inside the English travelogue and turns it into a polite counter-discourse: an Indian understanding of India. The first Indian English book is already a counter-text.
Section II breaks “Company first.” English on Indian soil begins two decades before the East India Company. Father Thomas Stephens, an English Jesuit, reaches Goa in 1579, lives decades in Salsette and Goa, writes a Marathi–Konkani Christian Purana (printed 1640), and publishes no English books, only letters home. Hakluyt prints the 1579 letter in Principal Navigations (1589): first printed English account of an Englishman’s India. Ralph Fitch, merchant, reaches Goa in 1583 with Newbury, Leedes and Story; the Portuguese jail them; Stephens interprets. That is the first small community of English speakers on Indian soil. Fitch alone returns (1591); his narrative in Hakluyt (1599–1600) is the first English India-text meant for print. Missionary and merchant will dominate the next centuries. Between the 1580s and the 1780s the British archive grows in three genres they already used: personal letter, epistolary eyewitness, formal travel narrative. After about 1660, under Cromwell and Charles II, Company factories hold a stable English-speaking community on the coasts. English becomes a continuous practical medium — still 175 years before colonial English schools. The spine of dates is Stephens 1579, Fitch, Hakluyt, 1660, Dean Mahomet 1794.
The four zones explain the leak. They are powered by a prior literate Indian multilingualism — Mughal Persian, Sanskrit, regional languages — and they fail where that literacy is absent. Employment: dubhashis, personal baniyas, later Orientalist “native informants,” domestic service, the Company army. Mahomet, Boriah and Roy all meet English here. After 1835 the dubhashi yields to the English-educated middle class. Marriage and family: Englishmen, few Englishwomen; mixed children raised Christian and Anglophone — Derozio’s parentage is the example inside the period. Religious conversion: missions, Company ban until 1813; conversion as Europeanisation. Friendship: Godfrey Evan Baker and Din Muhammad; Roy and the Unitarians.
Section IV is three first writers, then the thesis. Mahomet: Patna, Baker’s camp from age eleven, Ireland 1784, school, marriage, Travels 1794 — formed in employment, friendship, marriage, conversion. C. V. Boriah: Telugu Vaishnava brahman, dubhashi to Colin Mackenzie, “Account of the Jains” (c. 1803, printed 1809), multilingual already. Stephens 1579, Hakluyt, Fitch, the factories after 1660, Dean Mahomet 1794, Boriah and Roy close the early history.
निर्धारित खंड I, II, IV।
Dean Mahomet, The Travels of Dean Mahomet,

Write a note on alienation with examples that are not only diaspora.
Or: Write a note on hybridity with Bhabha’s third space, Soyinka, and Tan.
Model answer
Alienation is the condition of being a stranger to one’s work, society, language or own life. A person may be present in a place and still not belong. It is an inner weather, not only a ticket out of a country. Exile is a legal or political fact; alienation is a relation of feeling and structure. Diaspora is community scatter plus homeland memory; a person can be alienated at home without that map.
Kishwar Naheed’s “Talking to Myself” is a private voice because the public room has no ear. The crime is literacy; the refrain “Punish me” is irony. Heaney’s child in “Blackberry-Picking” stores fruit in a byre and meets rat-grey fungus; hope returns yearly and is estranged from itself. Neruda buries a dog beside a rusted machine; after the burial the speaker is a little dead. Murakami’s birthday wish is never named in an anonymous city. Szymborska’s one mind cannot hold four billion faces.
Ali’s postcard is both diaspora and this chill: belonging minus presence. Heaney’s farm and Neruda’s garden have not left a country. Naheed, Heaney and Neruda stay in one place and are still strangers to the names on offer. Alienation is that chill; identity crisis is the scramble for a name.
Or
Hybridity is mixing that makes a third form — of language, identity, ritual or genre — rather than a pure return to origin.

Model answer
