Write a note on the Bengal Renaissance, and say why it is studied with IWE.

Or: Distinguish Anglo-Indian writing from IWE. Where does Ruskin Bond sit?

Model answer

The Bengal Renaissance is the nineteenth-century awakening in religion, society, education and letters centred on Calcutta — Hindu College (1817), the Brahmo Samaj, Rammohan Roy, Vidyasagar, Derozio’s Young Bengal, Madhusudan, Bankim and Tagore. It is not the Italian Renaissance copied onto the Hooghly. IWE’s first poets grow in that climate, and Nil Darpan (1860; Dutt’s English 1861) is its protest theatre. English education and print made a bilingual gentry; Indian reform and modern Bengali grew beside the first Indian English verse and the first Indian English novel, Bankim’s Rajmohan’s Wife (1864).

Sumit Sarkar cautions that the movement was largely Hindu, male, Calcutta-centred and shaped by colonial rule, not a rebirth of the whole people. The Renaissance is the climate of IWE, not another name for IWE itself. Derozio taught at Hindu College; Madhusudan began in English verse and then made Bengali epic; Dutt’s English Nil Darpan is translation, not originally IWE in Naik’s sense.

Three jobs remain distinct: the Calcutta climate; original IWE that grew there; and Indian writing through English such as indigo in translation. Tagore’s English Gitanjali (Nobel 1913) is self-translation, yet 1913 remains a date. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still holds.

Or

In Naik, Anglo-Indian writing is the literature of Englishmen and other Westerners in India or about India — Kipling, Forster’s A Passage to India, Paul Scott. The writer’s passport is British or European; India is the scene. Indian Writing in English is originally English work by authors Indian by birth, ancestry or nationality. The two shelves remain distinct. Indo-Anglian is the older name for the same field as IWE. The printed heading Indo-Anglican uses a church word; the scholarly spelling is Indo-Anglian.

Ruskin Bond belongs to the Eurasian community by ancestry, lives in India, and writes in English, so he belongs with IWE, not with Kipling. Dutt’s English Nil Darpan and Manto’s Urdu tale in English dress are Indian writing through English; they are not the definition of IWE.

The short distinction is passport and language of composition. Kipling describes India; Bond writes an Indian life in English. Naik 1982 remains the test: originally English, Indian writer. Mehrotra (2008) keeps the same shelves. Dean Mahomed (1794) may be named as an early English book by an Indian; the map still begins with Hindu College and Derozio.

Indian Writing in English

Q. 2 (8 marks) · Unit 2

Explain with reference to the context: “Hark! Lakshman! Hark, again that cry! / It is, — it is thy brother’s voice!”

Hark! Lakshman! Hark, again that cry! / It is, — it is thy brother’s voice!”

Or: Explain with reference to the context: “Thank God the scorpion picked on me / And spared my children.”

Thank God the scorpion picked on me / And spared my children.”

Model answer

Reference. These are the opening lines of Toru Dutt’s ballad “Lakshman,” collected in Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan (1882). The speaker is Sita, addressing Lakshman in the forest hermitage. The form is a ballad in quatrains. Dutt recasts an episode of the Ramayana in Victorian English; the poem is original IWE, not a line-by-line translation of Valmiki.

Context. Rama has gone after the golden deer. Maricha, dying, imitates Rama’s cry for help. Sita hears “O haste, Lakshman, haste.” Lakshman knows the forest’s tricks and will not leave the woman he was charged to guard. Sita then wounds him with the charge of desire for the widowed queen. The printed lyric is this quarrel.

Explanation. The doubled “Hark” and the broken “It is, — it is” are panic made audible. Sita’s certainty that the voice is Rama’s is the engine of the ballad: she will not be comforted, and Lakshman’s duty will be rewritten as betrayal. Later stanzas answer with his patience and then with his going, once the insult is spoken. The extract is the start of that argument, not the whole Ramayana.

Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan (1882) में संगृहीत।

दुहरा “Hark” और टूटा “It is, — it is” सुनने योग्य घबराहट है।

Reference. These are the last lines of Nissim Ezekiel’s “Night of the Scorpion,” from The Unfinished Man (1960). The speaker of the lyric is the remembering child; the quoted speech is the mother’s, after the sting. The poem is free verse in a spoken register, the type of poetry after 1950.

Context. A scorpion, driven in by rain, has stung the mother. Peasants crowd with lanterns, name the insect the Evil One, and hope that every movement of the poisoner will burn a sin of the woman’s previous birth. The sceptic father tries powder, paraffin, a holy man. After twenty hours the pain loses its sting. Only then does the mother speak the two lines. The book is not The Exact Name (1965). The lyric is not Derozio and not Naidu.

Explanation. The peasants’ theology and the father’s reason have both been heard; neither gets the last word. The mother’s sentence is love, not doctrine: she thanks God that the poison chose her body and not the children’s. Ezekiel’s irony stays to the end — “Thank God” is piety, yet the feeling is maternal, not ritual. Poetry after 1950 here is memory, city-educated voice, and an Indian night told without a harp.

ये Nissim Ezekiel के “Night of the Scorpion” की अंतिम पंक्तियाँ हैं, The Unfinished Man (1960) से।

पुस्तक The Exact Name (1965) नहीं।

Q. 3 (8 marks) · Unit 3

Critically appreciate Manto’s “The Assignment” as a Partition story.

Or: Critically appreciate Deshpande’s “The Intrusion” as a story of the inner room.

Model answer

Saadat Hasan Manto’s “The Assignment” is the Amritsar Partition tale. Retired judge Mian Abdul Hai will not leave his Hindu-majority street. Sughra, seventeen, watches fires. A knock comes: not old Gurmukh Singh, who for ten years brought Id seviyan, but his son Santokh Singh, because the dying charge was that the yearly gift must not stop. Santokh then nods to four masked men with torches so they may proceed against the house. The kindness was the first assignment; the house is the second.

The tale is Urdu in origin: Indian writing through English, not originally IWE in Naik’s sense. Manto’s art is dryness: names, food, a door, two spoken lines. Trust and betrayal are the same evening.

Beside Narayan’s banyan and Bond’s station, neighbour-feeling is still named and already sold. A Muslim house still opens to a Sikh gift, and the year is 1947. Basharat is eleven. Partition writing here is a Muslim house that still opens to a Sikh gift, then burns. The two assignments occupy one evening of trust and betrayal.

Or

Shashi Deshpande’s “The Intrusion” is a first-person wedding-night story. The narrator is a new wife in an arranged match. She wants talk, delay, a self that is not immediately a body for use. He comes in as husband — legally entitled — and forces sex. The title is exact: the intrusion is into her person, inside marriage, where the law and the family see no crime. The climate is the woman’s house after the wedding.

Morning is tea, ordinary speech, the world that calls this consummation. That calm is the second violence. Deshpande’s English is quiet. The shock is that the narrator can describe the act and still not be heard. Beside Narayan’s public oral theatre this is a closed room.

What the law calls consummation the woman experiences as trespass. The centre is the unheard wife. Deshpande writes originally in English: IWE in Naik’s sense.

Mukherjee’s twice-born design sits in the background: an Indian inner life told in English. Morning tea can name trespass as consummation. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still holds.

Q. 4 (8 marks) · Unit 4

Explain the title Nectar in a Sieve. Distinguish Kuti from Sacrabani.

शीर्षक Nectar in a Sieve स्पष्ट कीजिए।

Or: Write a note on Amritlal Patel in Dance Like a Man.

Dance Like a Man

Model answer

The title of Kamala Markandaya’s Nectar in a Sieve (1954) quotes Coleridge: work without hope draws nectar in a sieve — sweetness that will not hold. Rukmani narrates looking back. Married very young to Nathan, a tenant without land of his own, she bears Ira and sons, last Kuti. Hope leaks: crop, children, husband, hut. A tannery arrives. Raja is beaten to death for stealing in hunger. Ira, returned as barren, sells her body in the famine so Kuti may eat; Kuti dies anyway; she later bears Sacrabani, an albino boy. Eviction, city, Puli, Nathan’s death on the road home.

Kuti is Rukmani’s last infant. Sacrabani is Ira’s son. Kenny’s medicine helps and does not stay. Gandhi is not the engine. Mukherjee’s twice-born novel is this English book of monsoon and a woman’s remembered speech.

The sieve is the metaphor: work without hope. The farm is not restored as a pastoral. Ira is the novel’s daughter; Lata is Dattani’s. Selvam remains with Kenny’s work; Murugan is lost in the city; Puli is adopted on the road home.

Mahesh Dattani’s Dance Like a Man (staged 1989) is a two-act play between a 1990s Bangalore present and memory of the 1940s–70s. Jairaj and Ratna, once a pair of Bharatanatyam dancers, are old. Their daughter Lata is the dancer they were not allowed to finish becoming. Viswas, Lata’s fiancé, must hear the family history. Amritlal Patel, Jairaj’s father, is dead in the present and fiercely alive in memory: a reformist public man who will fund a nation and will not fund a son who dances.

Amritlal’s rule is gender as law. Dance is for women, or for the “wrong” men. He shuts the practice space and buys Jairaj’s surrender with the house. Jairaj drinks; Ratna bargains. The ayah doses the infant with opium so the parents can dance an important night; that death is the family’s secret engine. Lata’s success is pride and theft. The play ends with the old couple dancing, the title hanging as taunt, not praise.

Jairaj is punished for not being a “man”; Ratna for being too much an artist. After the British have gone, the brown patriarch still uses “what will people say.” Culture is a weapon inside a family. Ira is Markandaya’s daughter; Lata is Dattani’s.

Mahesh Dattani का Dance Like a Man (मंच 1989) दो-अंक नाटक है जो 1990 के बंगलूर वर्तमान और 1940–70 की स्मृति के बीच चलता है।

Q. 5 (8 marks) · Unit 5

Name Mitra, Dutt and Long as three jobs in the English Nil Darpan, and show why the play is protest theatre.

Or: Write a note on patriotism as service in Kalam’s chapter 5.

Model answer

Nil Darpan means the indigo mirror: a play held up so planters and the capital can see the ryot’s face. Dinabandhu Mitra writes it in Bengali in 1860, in the climate of the indigo disturbances. Ryots were forced to plant indigo instead of food, paid wretchedly, beaten by factory men. The play is Bengal Renaissance theatre: modern social stage, not a Puranic dance. Michael Madhusudan Dutt translates it as The Indigo Planting Mirror (1861). James Long published the English; he was fined Rs 1,000 and imprisoned one month. The play is Indian writing through English, not originally IWE in Naik’s sense. The crop is indigo, not tea.

Goluk Chunder Basu is the householder-ryot; Soirindri his wife; Nobin Madhab the elder son who resists; loyal Torap; planters Wood and Rose; kinsman Ray Churn on the factory’s side. Nobin dies of wounds; Goluk after humiliation and prison; the women are left in wreckage. Melodrama is the nineteenth-century tool that carried peasant suffering to Calcutta and, in English, to officials who did not read Bengali. Sarkar’s caution: elite theatre, real wound.

English readers must watch their own countrymen as villains, not as Kipling’s burden-bearers. Mitra, Dutt and Long remain three jobs.

Or

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (1931–2015) writes Ignited Minds as public argument, not as memoir only. Chapter 5, “Patriotism beyond Politics and Religion,” opens from Vivekananda: better a hundred thousand hells doing good than a private liberation that ignores others. Patriotism is larger than party and larger than sect. “For great men, religion is a way of making friends; small people make religion a fighting tool.” The Rig Veda line — let noble thoughts come from every side — warrants a modern civic English. The chapter is not Wings of Fire.

He builds by anecdote. Biju Patnaik and Sukarno; Gandhi in Noakhali rather than on the Red Fort rampart on 15 August; Rameswaram’s shared tank. Identity can enrich Indianness without becoming a fighting tool. “No ideology is above the security and prosperity of our country. No agenda is more important than harmony among the people.”

The method is mission-talk: vision, combined action. Beside Nil Darpan, one text is translation of a colonial wound; the chapter is civic English. Kalam writes originally in English; Mitra wrote in Bengali. Gandhi in Noakhali is patriotism as service rather than as a speech from the Red Fort.

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (1931–2015) Ignited Minds अध्याय Wings of Fire नहीं।

Q. 1 (20 marks) · Unit 1

Write an essay on the prominent authors of Indian Writing in English in the varied genres.

Model answer

The prominent authors of Indian Writing in English are best mapped by genre. Poetry is the oldest continuous IWE line. Derozio’s Poems (1827) begin verse at Hindu College: a Eurasian teacher, English mother, Indo-Portuguese father. Toru Dutt’s “Lakshman” (Ancient Ballads, 1882) recasts epic episode. Naidu’s songs, The Golden Threshold (1905) and The Bird of Time (1912), turn folk scene into music. After 1950: Ezekiel’s A Time to Change (1952) and “Night of the Scorpion” from The Unfinished Man (1960); Kolatkar’s Jejuri (1976; Commonwealth Poetry Prize 1977); Alexander’s “Her Garden”; Dai’s Arunachal lyric. Ramanujan and Kamala Das fill the same modern generation in the same modern generation. Gokak’s treasury and Bruce King’s Three Indian Poets name the two rooms.

Fiction runs from Anand’s protest and Narayan’s Malgudi through Raja Rao’s oral English, Markandaya’s furrow, Deshpande’s inner room and Ao’s Nagaland. Ruskin Bond’s Deoli halt sits with IWE by Indian life, not with Kipling. Rushdie after 1981 is a development date, not a set novel. Drama is thinner; the original-English playwright on the list is Dattani (Dance Like a Man, 1989). Banerjee’s The Persecuted (1831) is often the first Indian play in English. Prose runs from Rammohan through Vivekananda, Gandhi and Nehru to Kalam, Ignited Minds chapter 5.

Naik’s test sorts the map. Original IWE: Derozio to Kalam. Anglo-Indian writing: Kipling, Forster, Scott. Indian writing through English: Dutt’s Nil Darpan, Manto’s Urdu tale. Mukherjee’s twice-born novel names the fiction’s double birth. Indo-Anglian is the older name for IWE; Indo-Anglican is the church spelling on the printed list.

The Bengal Renaissance is the Calcutta climate, not a synonym for IWE: Hindu College 1817, Roy, Vidyasagar, Young Bengal, Madhusudan, Bankim’s Rajmohan’s Wife (1864), Nil Darpan, Tagore. Sarkar (2010): Hindu, male, Calcutta-centred, colonial. Contemporary trends after Rushdie are many Englishes: diaspora, inner room, Northeast, city stage, translation beside the definition.

Classical Indian tradition supplies myth, epic, village tale, dance and the woman’s house. Western colonisation supplies English, print and the wound. IWE is their meeting. The map closes on Naik’s test: originally English, Indian writer.

Four phases still organise the names. Beginnings to 1857: Derozio’s college English. 1857 to about 1920: Toru Dutt, Naidu, Aurobindo, Tagore’s English Gitanjali (Nobel 1913). 1920 to 1947: Anand, Narayan and Raja Rao. After Independence: Ezekiel 1952, Markandaya 1954, Dattani 1989, Kalam 2002. Indo-Anglian, Anglo-Indian and IWE remain three names, not one literature.

Dean Mahomed’s 1794 English book may be named as an early date; the map still begins with Hindu College and Derozio. Anand’s protest, Narayan’s Malgudi and Raja Rao’s oral English are the 1930s fiction hinge. Ramanujan and Kamala Das belong with Ezekiel’s modern generation. Kalam’s chapter 5 proves that the prose shelf did not close with Nehru.

Naidu के गीत, The Golden Threshold (1905) और The Bird of Time (1912), लोक-दृश्य को संगीत बनाते हैं। 1950 के बाद: Ezekiel 1952 और “Night of the Scorpion” (1960); Kolatkar का Jejuri (1976; पुरस्कार 1977); Alexander; Dai।

Anglo-Indian: Kipling, Forster, Scott।

Q. 2 (20 marks) · Unit 2

Discuss the women’s voices in the prescribed lyrics — Dutt, Naidu, Ezekiel’s mother, Alexander and Dai.

Model answer

The prescribed lyrics give more than one woman’s voice. Toru Dutt’s “Lakshman” (Ancient Ballads, 1882) is Sita’s fear and a brother’s honour in a ballad that still says “Hark” and “thy.” Naidu’s “The Bangle Sellers” (The Bird of Time, 1912) and “Palanquin Bearers” (The Golden Threshold, 1905) are songs of display and labour: three ages of woman, silver and blue as mountain mist; a bride borne like a pearl, “Lightly” then “Softly.” Ezekiel’s mother, at the close of “Night of the Scorpion” (The Unfinished Man, 1960), thanks God that the sting spared the children: one sentence of love after a night of rites. These four belong to two shelves: early song, and poetry after 1950.

Meena Alexander’s “Her Garden” (House of a Thousand Doors, 1988) is a grandmother never met; the voice is diasporic and private. Mamang Dai’s “The Sorrow of Women,” from An Obscure Place: Five Survival Lyrics, gives Arunachal land, war, and a woman’s waiting; the voice is collective yet spare. They are not a fifth and sixth Naidu. After 1950 the woman’s lyric need not be a bazaar or an epic cry. Kolatkar’s bus remains a man’s camera on the road; the woman’s map is Dutt, Naidu, Ezekiel’s mother, Alexander and Dai.

The change is music, not passport. All five names remain originally English, Indian writers. Early verse: rhyme, public scene, decorative song. Later verse: spoken line, irony or memory, inner house, hill.

Naidu remains the Nightingale; later poets named the danger that India becomes costume. Ezekiel’s irony stays to the mother’s thanks. Dai’s “My love, what shall I do?” is survival, not festival. Alexander’s monsoon in a dead garden is memory, not a temple fair.

The last sound may be a mother’s thanks, a monsoon in a dead garden, or a woman asking what she shall do when men talk hunger and fire. That is the map of women’s voices among the prescribed lyrics.

Dutt’s Sita fears for Rama inside a brother’s honour. Naidu’s women buy colour for maiden, bride and the mid-journey house. Ezekiel’s mother speaks after the peasants and the father have had their night. Alexander’s speaker claims unity with a grandmother never seen. Dai’s speaker asks what she shall do when men talk hunger and fire. Five women’s voices, two musics, originally English Indian writers.

Palanquin labour is sung as lightness; bangle-colour is destiny for maiden, bride and the mid-journey house. The mother’s thanks after twenty hours is love, not doctrine. Alexander’s monsoon is a rare fragrance of dry mulberry. Dai’s waiting remains when the mountain calls the men away. Five voices, two musics.

Mamang Dai का “The Sorrow of Women” अरुणाचल की भूमि, युद्ध और स्त्री की प्रतीक्षा देता है।

Dai का “My love, what shall I do?”

Q. 3 (20 marks) · Unit 3

Discuss Manto’s “The Assignment” and Deshpande’s “The Intrusion” as two climates of harm.

Model answer

Two climates of harm sit among the prescribed stories. Manto’s “The Assignment” is Amritsar at Partition. Retired judge Mian Abdul Hai will not leave; Sughra watches fires; Santokh Singh brings Id seviyan as his dead father charged, then nods to the masked men so they may proceed against the house. Two assignments, one evening of trust and betrayal. The tale is Urdu in origin: Indian writing through English, not originally IWE in Naik’s sense.

Deshpande’s “The Intrusion” turns the map indoors. A wedding-night wife is forced; morning tea names the act consummation. The climate is the inner room, marriage as law without a listened yes. Deshpande writes originally in English. Beside Manto the house is still a wound, but the year is not 1947 and the street is not on fire.

Ao’s letter and Narayan’s banyan are other climates: hill-war and oral village. Bond’s Deoli is unfinished desire. The five stories are five climates; these two are public fire and private trespass. Mukherjee’s twice-born novel is the background book for Deshpande: an Indian inner life told in English. Manto remains the other door, like Dutt’s Nil Darpan.

Speech fails as a gift that licenses a fire, and as an unheard body. Manto’s dryness is names, food, a door, two spoken lines. Deshpande’s English is quiet: the shock is that the narrator can describe the act and still not be heard.

Read together they answer why later IWE widened who may speak. Partition writing here is not a list of massacres; it is a Muslim house that still opens to a Sikh gift. The woman’s story is not a bazaar-song; it is a closed room after relatives have joked and left. Two climates of harm, two Englishes, one unit of Indian life.

Manto’s English is a translation climate: Urdu first, then the anthology page. Deshpande’s English is composition: an Indian inner life told in the school language, Mukherjee’s twice-born design in a short story. Santokh’s seviyan and nod occupy one evening of 1947. The wedding-night room occupies a marriage the law already owns. Public fire and private trespass are the two climates of harm.

Sughra is seventeen; Basharat is eleven. The street is Hindu-majority; the retired judge will not abandon the house. Gurmukh Singh’s ten-year Id custom becomes the son’s duty. Kindness and the nod occupy one evening. Deshpande’s narrator can describe the act and still not be heard. Two Englishes: translation-climate and composition. Two climates of harm.

Speech fails as a gift that licenses a fire, and as an unheard body on a wedding night. Manto’s dryness is names, food, a door, two spoken lines. Deshpande’s English is quiet: morning tea can name trespass as consummation. Public fire and private trespass remain the two climates of harm.

Q. 4 (20 marks) · Unit 4

Discuss Nectar in a Sieve as a rural novel of hunger, land and hope.

Model answer

Kamala Markandaya’s Nectar in a Sieve (1954) is the rural novel of hunger, land and the tannery. Rukmani narrates looking back. Married very young to Nathan, a tenant without land of his own, she learns to write and bears Ira and sons: Arjun, Thambi, Murugan, Raja, Selvam, last Kuti. A tannery arrives with cash, smell and a road. Arjun and Thambi work there, then leave for the tea estates. Raja is beaten to death for stealing in hunger. Ira, returned as barren, sells her body in the famine so Kuti may eat; Kuti dies anyway; Sacrabani is born later. Rain and the zamindar finish the eviction. In the city Murugan has vanished; they befriend Puli; Nathan dies on the road home; she returns with Puli and Selvam. The land is not restored.

The title quotes Coleridge: work without hope draws nectar in a sieve. Hope leaks. Land and tenancy: Nathan never owns. Industry: wages and the son’s corpse. Hunger: Kuti, Ira’s bargain, stone-breaking. Gender: barrenness as a returned wife; a mother’s body as the last store. East and West: Kenny’s colonial medicine helps and does not stay. Kunthi uses knowledge as a whip. Puli is the city’s orphan cleverness that the village adopts.

Mukherjee’s The Twice Born Fiction (1971) names the design: an Indian tale inside English. Gandhi is not the engine; Raja Rao’s Kanthapura is the Gandhian climate elsewhere. Markandaya’s engine is the woman’s remembering voice. Naik’s test: originally English, Indian writer.

Kuti is Rukmani’s infant; Sacrabani is Ira’s albino son. Ira is the novel’s daughter; Lata is Dattani’s. The tannery belongs here; Bharatanatyam belongs to the play. Beside Nil Darpan the same land and hunger look different — a woman’s memory of tenancy after 1947 versus a factory-play of 1860.

The novel is a first-person chronicle, years leaking through a sieve, a return that is not restoration. Coleridge’s sieve is the key. Work without hope is the last sentence the furrow teaches.

Kunthi uses knowledge of Kenny as a whip. Stone-breaking in the city is hope leaking through another hole. Selvam stays with the doctor’s work; Murugan vanishes among streets. The novel’s “I” is Rukmani, not Markandaya. Work without hope is the last sentence the furrow teaches.

Arjun and Thambi take tannery wages then leave for tea estates. Raja’s corpse is industry’s price. Stone-breaking in the city is hope leaking through another hole. The novel’s “I” remains Rukmani looking back, not a nationalist speech.

Kamala Markandaya का Nectar in a Sieve (1954) भूख, भूमि और चमड़ा-कारखाने का ग्रामीण उपन्यास है।

Q. 5 (20 marks) · Unit 5

Write an essay on Kalam’s “Patriotism beyond Politics and Religion.”

Kalam के “Patriotism beyond Politics and Religion” पर निबंध लिखिए।

Model answer

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (1931–2015), scientist and later President, writes Ignited Minds (Penguin, 2002) as public argument. The chapter is not Wings of Fire and not a missile memoir.

He builds by anecdote. Biju Patnaik’s friendship with Sukarno, and hunger for an Indian long-range missile, show a politician whose love of the country outruns office. Gandhi in Noakhali, with riot-wounded families rather than on the Red Fort rampart on 15 August, is patriotism as service. Rameswaram — Hindu and Muslim life sharing a tank — is brotherhood as practice. Syrian Christians of Kerala and A. R. Rahman: identity can enrich Indianness without becoming a fighting tool. Security is part of the nation’s care. “No ideology is above the security and prosperity of our country. No agenda is more important than harmony among the people.”

The English is twenty-first-century, plain, hortatory: the cousin of reform pamphlets and Nehru’s public book, the opposite of Kolatkar’s camera. Kalam writes originally in English, so he sits on Naik’s prose shelf. Mitra wrote Nil Darpan in Bengali; Dutt translated; Long published. Only Kalam is IWE in Naik’s strict sense in that pairing.

Beside indigo’s colonial wound the chapter asks the young to think of the nation as bigger than the individual. Mission-talk: vision, combined action, a nation that stops belittling itself. IWE is not only novels and lyrics; History of the field names the prose shelf from Rammohan to the present.

Syrian Christians of Kerala and A. R. Rahman show that identity can enrich Indianness without becoming a fighting tool. Security is part of the nation’s care. Mission-talk — vision, combined action, a nation that stops belittling itself — is the method. History of the field names a prose shelf from Rammohan to the present; Kalam sits on that shelf as original IWE. Ignited Minds is not Wings of Fire.

Biju Patnaik’s hunger for an Indian long-range missile shows love of country outrunning office. The Rig Veda line — let noble thoughts come from every side — warrants civic English. Only Kalam of this pair sits on Naik’s IWE shelf; Mitra wrote in Bengali.

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (1931–2015), अध्याय Wings of Fire नहीं।

Ignited Minds, Wings of Fire नहीं।

Ignited Minds, Wings of Fire नहीं।

Write a note on contemporary trends in Indian Writing in English.

Or: Write a note on Mukherjee’s twice-born fiction, with Markandaya’s novel as proof.

Model answer

Contemporary trends in IWE means the field after the mid-century moderns, especially after Rushdie (1981). English is no longer only the ruler’s leftover; it is one of India’s languages. The global Indian novel makes history a family plot; Rushdie is a development date, not a set novel. Diaspora and memory: Meena Alexander’s “Her Garden.” The woman’s inner room: Deshpande’s “The Intrusion.” The Northeast: Temsula Ao and Mamang Dai. City theatre: Dattani’s Dance Like a Man. Beside original IWE a translation industry carries Indian-language texts into English; The indigo play opens that door with Nil Darpan.

Poetry after 1950 is the verse hinge of the same map: Ezekiel 1952, Kolatkar’s bus, Alexander’s grandmother, Dai’s waiting. Markandaya’s 1954 furrow and Kalam’s civic prose show that contemporary IWE is not only the prize novel.

Naik’s test still closes the note: originally English, Indian writer. Translation sits beside the definition, not inside it. Many Englishes — village, city, hill, public argument — share one literature.

Mehrotra’s anthologies map the poets; Mukherjee maps the novel. After Independence the field is many Englishes, not one prize style. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still holds.

शहर-रंगमंच: Dattani का Dance Like a Man।

Or

Meenakshi Mukherjee’s The Twice Born Fiction (Heinemann, 1971) names the Indian English novel’s double birth: an Indian imagination in a language learned at school. The tale is Indian; the composition is originally English. That is Naik’s IWE, not Kipling’s Anglo-Indian shelf, and not a translation like Dutt’s Nil Darpan.

The set novel is Markandaya’s Nectar in a Sieve (1954). Rukmani’s “I” carries monsoon, tenancy and hunger inside English. Anand, Narayan and Raja Rao in the 1930s are the novel’s earlier twice-born generation. Deshpande’s inner room is a later twice-born climate. Gandhi is not Markandaya’s engine; Raja Rao’s Kanthapura is the Gandhian climate elsewhere.

Twice-born is the novel’s design. English is not a costume on a Bengali plot. The pulse is Indian speech remembered in English. Ira is the novel’s daughter; Lata is Dattani’s.

Bankim’s Rajmohan’s Wife (1864) is the first Indian novel in English, already twice-born in Mukherjee’s sense: an Indian household plot composed in the school language. Dattani’s play is drama, not the twice-born novel; Naik’s test still closes the note: originally English, Indian writer.

निर्धारित उपन्यास Markandaya का Nectar in a Sieve (1954) है।

Explain with reference to the context: “Some are meet for a maiden’s wrist, / Silver and blue as the mountain mist.”

Some are meet for a maiden’s wrist, / Silver and blue as the mountain mist.”

Or: Explain with reference to the context: “Lightly, O lightly we bear her along, / She sways like a flower in the wind of our song.”

Lightly, O lightly we bear her along, / She sways like a flower in the wind of our song.”

Model answer

Reference. These lines are from Sarojini Naidu’s “The Bangle Sellers,” collected in The Bird of Time (1912). The speakers are the sellers, carrying shining loads to the temple fair. The form is a bazaar song of refrain. The lyric is original IWE. It is not “Palanquin Bearers,” which has no three-age scheme, and not Ezekiel’s scorpion-night.

Context. Three ages of woman buy. Stanza 1 is the cry of the fair. Stanza 2 is the maiden’s shelf: silver and blue as mountain mist; buds that dream by a woodland stream; the bloom of new-born leaves. Rainbow tint of happy love, bridal fire, and the purple and gold of her who has journeyed through life belong to later stanzas, not to this extract.

Explanation. Colour is destiny. Early IWE still uses Victorian-Romantic song: refrain, decorative India, public scene. Later poets named the danger of costume. The extract is the girl’s glass, not the bride’s flame. Silver and blue is the maiden only.

Silver and blue is the maiden only. The extract is the girl’s glass, not the bride’s flame.

ये Sarojini Naidu के “The Bangle Sellers” की पंक्तियाँ हैं, The Bird of Time (1912) में संगृहीत।

Reference. These lines open Sarojini Naidu’s “Palanquin Bearers,” collected in The Golden Threshold (1905). The speakers are the palanquin-bearers, a labouring “we.” The form is a song of two six-line stanzas with refrain. The lyric is original IWE.

Context. A palanquin is a covered litter. The men carry a bride. Stanza 1 is light and gay: she sways like a flower, skims like a bird, floats like a laugh; they bear her like a pearl on a string. The refrain is “Lightly, O lightly.” Stanza 2 will slow the step to “Softly, O softly,” a star in dew, and a tear from the eyes of a bride. This extract is still the gay opening.

Explanation. Hard labour is sung as lightness. Refrain imitates the swaying step. Early IWE still uses Victorian-Romantic song. The extract is processional lyric, not a nationalist ode, and not the softened second movement. The word here is Lightly, not Softly. The opening word of this movement is Lightly, not Softly; stanza 2 will slow the step.

गीत “The Bangle Sellers” नहीं।

Q. 3 (8 marks) · Unit 3

Write a critical note on Ao’s “The Letter.”

Or: Write a critical note on Manto’s “The Assignment.”

Model answer

Temsula Ao’s “The Letter,” from Laburnum for My Head (2009), is Nagaland as a war zone, not the book’s title-tale of a laburnum grave. A lone underground collector comes for “emergency tax” and is killed. In his pocket is a letter: a son asking for school examination fees, not a manifesto. Long Legs, a tall villager, must read it. Earlier in the same cycle a beaten householder had pleaded to keep money for his own son’s fees. Both sides press the same poor house. The climate is grey: the gunman is also a father.

Ao writes originally in English; this is IWE in Naik’s sense. The English is spare. There is no Malgudi comedy and no Deoli romance. The Northeast enters the map as household fact, not as folklore colour. Dai’s “The Sorrow of Women” is the verse neighbour of this hill.

The centre is the dead letter. Speech fails as paper in a dead man’s pocket. The underground are Naga insurgents of the story’s war, not a second Partition mob and not Manto’s masked men.

Temsula Ao का “The Letter,” Laburnum for My Head (2009) से, युद्ध-क्षेत्र के रूप में नागालैंड है, पुस्तक की शीर्षक-कथा अमलतास-कब्र नहीं।

Dai का “The Sorrow of Women” इस पहाड़ का पद्य-पड़ोसी है।

Or

Q. 4 (8 marks) · Unit 4

Write a note on Rukmani as narrator of Nectar in a Sieve.

Nectar in a Sieve

Or: Write a note on Lata’s success in Dance Like a Man.

Dance Like a Man

Model answer

Rukmani narrates Nectar in a Sieve in the first person, looking back. The novel’s “I” is not Markandaya. Married very young to Nathan, a tenant without land of his own, she learns to write, bears Ira and sons, last Kuti. A tannery arrives. Raja is beaten to death for stealing in hunger. Ira, returned as barren, sells her body so Kuti may eat; Kuti dies; Sacrabani is born later. Eviction, city, Puli, Nathan’s death on the road home. She returns with Puli and Selvam. The land is not restored.

A woman’s remembered speech is Mukherjee’s twice-born design: monsoon and hunger inside English. Kenny’s colonial medicine helps and does not stay. Kunthi uses knowledge as a whip. Gandhi is not the engine.

Kuti is Rukmani’s infant; Sacrabani is Ira’s albino son. Ira is the novel’s daughter; Lata is Dattani’s. The tannery belongs here; Bharatanatyam belongs to the play.

The title quotes Coleridge: work without hope draws nectar in a sieve. Hope leaks through every year she remembers. Selvam remains with Kenny’s work; Murugan is the son lost in the city. The “I” is a peasant woman’s English, not a nationalist speech.

Or

In Mahesh Dattani’s Dance Like a Man (staged 1989), Lata is the daughter who dances. Jairaj and Ratna, once a pair of Bharatanatyam dancers, are old in a 1990s Bangalore present. Lata is the dancer they were not allowed to finish becoming. Viswas, her fiancé, must hear the family history. Amritlal Patel, Jairaj’s father, is dead in the present: a reformist who will fund a nation and will not fund a son who dances.

Lata’s success is pride and theft. The ayah dosed an infant with opium so the parents could dance an important night; that death is the family’s secret engine. The old couple’s last dance leaves the title as taunt, not praise. Amritlal’s rule is gender as law: dance is for women, or for the “wrong” men.

Ira is Markandaya’s daughter; Lata is Dattani’s. After the British have gone, the brown patriarch still uses “what will people say.” Culture is a weapon inside a family.

Amritlal is dead in the present except as memory. Lata dances; the old couple’s last dance leaves the title as taunt.

Mahesh Dattani के Dance Like a Man (मंच 1989) में लता नाचती बेटी है।

Q. 5 (8 marks) · Unit 5

Write a note on James Long’s trial and the English Nil Darpan.

Or: Write a note on Kalam’s civic English in Ignited Minds, chapter 5.

Gandhi in Noakhali, not the Red Fort rampart, is patriotism as service in the same chapter.

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (1931–2015) Ignited Minds अध्याय Wings of Fire नहीं।

Q. 1 (20 marks) · Unit 1

Write a full essay distinguishing early Indian English poetry from poetry after 1950.

Model answer

Early Indian English poetry is the line from Derozio to Naidu, and Aurobindo, before the 1950s break. Gokak’s Golden Treasury of Indo-Anglian Poetry is the named book of that shelf. The verse learns Romantic and Victorian music; the subject is already Indian — lost glory, Puranic story, festival. Derozio, English mother and Indo-Portuguese father, taught at Hindu College. Toru Dutt’s Ancient Ballads (1882) recasts epic episode; “Lakshman” is the set ballad. Sarojini Naidu, the Nightingale of India, turns folk scene into song in “The Bangle Sellers” and “Palanquin Bearers.” Later poets named the danger: the song can freeze into picturesque India.

Poetry after 1950 revolts against that song. Ezekiel’s A Time to Change (1952) is the hinge; “Night of the Scorpion,” from The Unfinished Man (1960), is the proof — sceptic husband, believing women, a child’s memory, no harp. Kolatkar’s Jejuri (1976; Commonwealth Poetry Prize 1977) opens with “The Bus”: camera eye, tarpaulin, a divided face. Alexander’s “Her Garden” is private and diasporic. Dai’s “The Sorrow of Women” writes Arunachal land and war as a woman’s waiting.

The distinction is a change of music, not of passport. Early verse: rhyme, public scene, decorative song. After 1950: spoken sentence, city or hill, irony or memory. The hinge year is 1952. Kipling is the origin of neither shelf. Tagore’s English Gitanjali (Nobel 1913) is self-translation, yet 1913 remains a date beside Naidu. Aurobindo’s epic ambition belongs with that renaissance. Ramanujan, named by Bruce King with Ezekiel and Moraes, fills the modern generation beside Kolatkar.

Early verse still says Hark, Lightly, Softly, silver and blue. Later verse says Thank God, a divided face, a garden of the dead, a woman’s waiting. Gokak’s treasury is the early room; Bruce King is the later room. Derozio’s harp (1827) is the origin behind Dutt and Naidu; Ezekiel 1952 is the hinge.

Indo-Anglian is the older name for that verse; Anglo-Indian literature remains Kipling’s shelf. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still closes both rooms. Four later poets after 1950, not a fifth Naidu. The revolt is against picturesque India, not against Indian matter.

Walk the early proof in the set lyrics. Dutt’s ballad still opens “Hark! Lakshman! Hark”; Sita’s panic and a brother’s honour are Victorian-Romantic music on an Indian epic. Naidu’s bazaar still sells silver and blue as mountain mist for a maiden’s wrist, then bridal fire, then purple and gold. “Palanquin Bearers” still sings labour as “Lightly, O lightly,” then “Softly, O softly.” That is the early song later poets named as costume.

Walk the later proof in the same way. Ezekiel’s mother, after twenty hours, thanks God that the sting spared the children. Kolatkar’s bus buttons a tarpaulin against the sun and asks a co-passenger for a light. Alexander claims unity with a grandmother never met. Dai’s women already ask what they shall do when men talk hunger and fire. Four later musics, one revolt.

Ezekiel की A Time to Change (1952) धुरी है; “Night of the Scorpion,” The Unfinished Man (1960) से, प्रमाण है — संशयवादी पति, विश्वास करती स्त्रियाँ, बच्चे की स्मृति, कोई वीणा नहीं।

Lakshman!

Q. 2 (20 marks) · Unit 2

Discuss Dutt and Naidu as early Indian English poetry, and show what Ezekiel’s scorpion-night changes.

Model answer

Early Indian English poetry learns Victorian-Romantic music and already sings Indian matter. The early set poets are Toru Dutt and Sarojini Naidu. Dutt’s “Lakshman” (Ancient Ballads, 1882) is a ballad in quatrains. Sita and Lakshman speak; the demand is that the brother leave the hut after the false cry. Dutt recasts the Ramayana in English that still uses “Hark” and “thy.” The voice is public, epic, and a woman’s fear inside a brother’s honour.

Naidu’s “The Bangle Sellers” (The Bird of Time, 1912) is a bazaar: three ages of woman; stanza 2 silver and blue as mountain mist, woodland buds, new-born leaves. “Palanquin Bearers” (The Golden Threshold, 1905) is labour made graceful: “Lightly, O lightly” then “Softly, O softly,” a bride as pearl and star. Naidu is the Nightingale; later poets named the danger that India becomes costume. Both are IWE in Naik’s sense. Neither is Kipling. Gokak’s treasury is the named book of this shelf. Derozio’s harp (1827) is the origin behind them.

Ezekiel’s “Night of the Scorpion” (The Unfinished Man, 1960) answers that costume. Rain, a peasant crowd, a sceptic father, a mother who thanks God that the sting spared the children: the voice is a child’s memory, ironic and tender together. No harp. The hinge year is 1952, A Time to Change. Kolatkar, Alexander and Dai complete the later shelf; Dutt, Naidu and the scorpion-night are the change that can be heard in three lyrics.

Early verse: rhyme, personification, public scene, decorative song. Ezekiel: spoken sentence, village night, English that admits Indian life without bazaar-jewellery. The change of music is not a change of passport. Tagore’s English Gitanjali (Nobel 1913) is self-translation beside Naidu, not a fourth lyric of this trio.

Bruce King names the later room. The mother’s two lines after twenty hours of pain mark what Ezekiel changes in the early song of Dutt and Naidu.

Sita’s “Hark” is still epic panic; Naidu’s silver-and-blue maiden is still bazaar song. Ezekiel’s rain-night answers both without a harp. The mother’s two lines after twenty hours mark the change of music. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still holds.

The printed quarrel in “Lakshman” is Sita’s fear and a brother’s honour, not the golden deer staged at length. Naidu’s three ages of woman remain a temple-fair song. Ezekiel’s peasants name the insect the Evil One; the father tries powder and paraffin; the last word is the mother’s.

Ezekiel का “Night of the Scorpion” (1960) उस पोशाक का उत्तर है। धुरी-वर्ष 1952 है, A Time to Change।

Q. 3 (20 marks) · Unit 3

Discuss Narayan, Bond and Ao as three originally-English climates of Indian life.

Model answer

Three of the prescribed stories write originally in English and are IWE in Naik’s sense. Narayan’s “Under the Banyan Tree” is Somal, smaller than Malgudi. Nambi the storyteller lives in the temple porch and, on moonlit nights, takes his seat under the banyan. The crowd comes uncalled. He stares, waits, then unrolls kings and lovers until midnight. When the gift snags, he tells them the goddess has taken the tales back, and thereafter he hardly speaks. The climate is oral South India: a man, a tree, a public art that can leave.

Bond’s “The Night Train at Deoli” is a small halt on the way to Dehra: a college boy, a girl with baskets, a little speech, no second meeting, no search of the town. The climate is unfinished desire. Bond is Eurasian by ancestry and IWE by Indian life and language of composition, not Kipling’s Anglo-Indian shelf.

Ao’s “The Letter,” from Laburnum for My Head (2009), is Nagaland as a war zone, not the book’s title-tale of a laburnum grave. A lone underground collector is killed; the pocket holds a son’s examination-fee plea. Long Legs must read it. Earlier a beaten villager had begged to keep money for his own son’s fees. The climate is grey: both sides press the same poor house, and the letter makes the gunman a father. Dai’s lyric is the verse neighbour of this hill.

Manto and Deshpande are the other two climates — Partition-house and inner room — and they belong in a five-story map. This essay seats the three originally-English village, platform and hill. Speech fails as a goddess who takes stories back, one unfinished greeting, and a dead letter.

Mukherjee’s twice-born novel is the background book: Indian lives inside English, more than one centre. Narayan is public oral theatre; Bond is a private window; Ao is war as household paper. That meeting of three IWE climates is the answer.

Nambi lives in the temple porch; the crowd comes uncalled. Bond’s college boy never really searches the town. Ao’s Long Legs must read a dead man’s pocket. Three originally English climates of Indian life, one unit.

Somal is smaller than Malgudi; the banyan is public theatre. Deoli is a halt where no one important gets off. Nagaland in Ao is a war zone whose pocket holds a school fee, not a manifesto. Three originally English climates, one unit of Indian life.

Narayan का “Under the Banyan Tree” सोमल है, मालगुडी से छोटा।

Ao का “The Letter,” Laburnum for My Head (2009) से, युद्ध-क्षेत्र के रूप में नागालैंड है, पुस्तक की शीर्षक-कथा अमलतास-कब्र नहीं।

Q. 4 (20 marks) · Unit 4

Discuss Dance Like a Man as a city play of gender and art in independent India.

Model answer

English here is city speech — living-room, rehearsal, cruel joke — not Markandaya’s furrow.

Beside Nectar in a Sieve the question of independent India changes. Markandaya asks what tenancy, tannery and hunger do to a woman’s remembered life. Dattani asks what the new nation does with a son who dances. Ira is the novel’s daughter; Lata is the play’s. Kuti and Sacrabani belong to the novel; the opium infant belongs to the play. Mukherjee’s twice-born design names the novel; Dattani is original English drama, original English drama.

Naidu’s decorative dancer is the early costume this play refuses. Deshpande’s inner room is the story-neighbour of Ratna’s grim career. The title was always a taunt. That is the city play of gender and art.

The ayah’s opium dose is the family’s secret engine; Lata’s prize is pride and theft. Viswas, the fiancé, must hear the history. English here is living-room speech, rehearsal and cruel joke, not a peasant woman’s remembered furrow.

Amritlal shuts the practice space and buys surrender with the house. Jairaj drinks; Ratna bargains with a career the father will allow a daughter and not a son. Independent India’s question here is what the new nation does with a man who dances.

Mahesh Dattani का Dance Like a Man (मंच 1989) दो-अंक नाटक है जो 1990 के बंगलूर वर्तमान और 1940–70 की स्मृति के बीच चलता है।

Nectar in a Sieve

Q. 5 (20 marks) · Unit 5

Discuss James Long’s trial and the English Nil Darpan as protest that entered colonial law.

Model answer

James Long’s trial is the English Nil Darpan entering colonial law. Dinabandhu Mitra writes the play in Bengali in 1860, in the climate of the indigo disturbances. Ryots were forced to plant indigo instead of food, paid wretchedly, beaten by factory men. Michael Madhusudan Dutt translates it as The Indigo Planting Mirror (1861). Long, a missionary, publishes the English. He is fined Rs 1,000 and imprisoned one month. Planters had sued because an English book showed Englishmen as villains. Mitra, Dutt and Long remain three jobs.

Goluk Chunder Basu is the householder-ryot; Soirindri his wife; Nobin Madhab the elder son who resists and dies of wounds; Goluk dies after humiliation and prison; loyal Torap; planters Wood and Rose; kinsman Ray Churn on the factory’s side. Melodrama is the nineteenth-century tool that carried peasant suffering to Calcutta’s middle class and, in Dutt’s English, to officials who did not read Bengali. Sarkar’s caution: elite theatre, real wound, not a rebirth of the whole people.

The play is Bengal Renaissance protest theatre, not a Puranic dance. It is Indian writing through English, not originally IWE in Naik’s sense. The crop is indigo, not tea. Beside Markandaya the same land and hunger look different — a woman’s memory of tenancy after 1947 versus a factory-play before Gandhi.

English readers must watch their own countrymen as villains, not as Kipling’s burden-bearers. Madhusudan’s life is a double tongue: English verse, then Bengali epic, then this translation. Dattani writes original English drama; Mitra wrote in Bengali. Kalam’s chapter 5 of Ignited Minds is the other tone of reading India through English: civic original prose, not a courtroom.

The fine and the month in prison are the recorded numbers. The English title is The Indigo Planting Mirror. Protest reaches law because translation made the wound readable in the ruler’s tongue. That is Long’s place in the essay.

Goluk is the householder-ryot; Nobin dies of wounds; Goluk after humiliation and prison. Planters had sued because an English book showed Englishmen as villains. The crop is indigo, not tea. Protest reaches law because translation made the wound readable in the ruler’s tongue.

Soirindri is Goluk’s wife; loyal Torap stands with the house; Wood and Rose are the planters. Melodrama carried peasant suffering to Calcutta’s middle class and, in Dutt’s English, into a courtroom. Sarkar’s caution remains: elite theatre, real wound.

Planters had sued because an English book showed Englishmen as villains. The fine of Rs 1,000 and one month in prison are the recorded numbers. Protest reaches law because translation made the wound readable in the ruler’s tongue. That is Long’s place beside Mitra and Dutt.

अंग्रेज़ी शीर्षक The Indigo Planting Mirror है।

Model answer

Henry Louis Vivian Derozio (1809–1831) is the verse beginning of Indian Writing in English. His mother was English; his father Indo-Portuguese. He taught at Hindu College, Calcutta, and published Poems in 1827. “The Harp of India” and “To India — My Native Land” address the country as a silenced instrument and a fallen mother. The music is Romantic; the subject is already Indian. He died at twenty-two. Young Bengal is the college climate around him. Hindu College (1817) and, later, Macaulay’s Minute (1835) explain how a Eurasian teacher could write English verse as an Indian patriot.

In Naik’s history this is originally English work by an Indian writer, not Kipling’s Anglo-Indian shelf. Bankim’s Rajmohan’s Wife (1864) is the novel’s later start; Banerjee’s The Persecuted (1831) is often the first Indian play in English. Derozio belongs to poetry, and to the Bengal Renaissance as climate, not as a synonym for IWE. Sumit Sarkar cautions that Young Bengal was elite, male and Calcutta-centred.

Early Indian English poetry continues from this harp to Toru Dutt’s “Lakshman” and Naidu’s songs. Poetry after 1950, from Ezekiel’s A Time to Change (1952), will refuse that song. Derozio remains the origin of the verse line.

“The Harp of India” और “To India — My Native Land” देश को मौन वीणा और गिरी माँ के रूप में संबोधित करते हैं।

1950 के बाद की कविता, Ezekiel की A Time to Change (1952) से, वह गीत अस्वीकार करेगी।

The 1930s “big three” of the Indian English novel are Mulk Raj Anand, R. K. Narayan and Raja Rao. Anand’s protest fiction writes the coolie and the untouchable. Narayan’s Malgudi, and the smaller Somal of “Under the Banyan Tree,” write comic-grave ordinary life. Raja Rao’s Kanthapura writes a Gandhian village in an oral English. Together they are Mukherjee’s twice-born generation: Indian lives composed in English.

They sit after Bankim’s Rajmohan’s Wife (1864) and before Markandaya’s Nectar in a Sieve (1954). Naik’s test holds: originally English, Indian writers. They are not Kipling’s Anglo-Indian shelf. Dutt’s English Nil Darpan is translation beside them, not the novel’s definition.

Fiction after Independence still needs this hinge. Deshpande’s inner room and Ao’s letter are later climates; the 1930s three remain the novel’s first modern map. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still holds.

Anand’s coolie, Narayan’s storyteller who falls silent, and Raja Rao’s oral village remain three climates of the same decade. Mukherjee’s twice-born name is the novel’s design, not a church word. They are originally English, Indian writers.

वे Bankim के Rajmohan’s Wife (1864) के बाद और Markandaya के Nectar in a Sieve (1954) से पहले बैठते हैं।

Explain with reference to the context: “They are talking about hunger. / My love, what shall I do?”

They are talking about hunger. / My love, what shall I do?”

Or: Explain with reference to the context: a grandmother who “died so long before my birth that we are one.”

Model answer

Reference. These lines are from Mamang Dai’s “The Sorrow of Women,” grouped with An Obscure Place: Five Survival Lyrics. Dai writes as an Adi poet of Arunachal. The speaker is a woman. The form is spare free verse, poetry after 1950. The extract is not Naidu’s hill costume.

Context. Men talk in a public “they”: hunger, an unquenchable fire, land, war, the big things men die for. The woman-speaker turns to one man: “My love, what shall I do?” She already fears losing him to that public fire. Women’s knowledge is the house and the waiting when the mountain calls the men away.

Explanation. The sorrow is collective and then intimate. Dai does not decorate hill women as Naidu decorates bangle-buyers. There is no temple fair. Pair with Alexander: a dead grandmother’s garden versus a living fear of war. Survival here is hunger plus a life that outlasts the speech of war. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still holds.

The English is spare free verse. Contemporary IWE here is the hill as household fact, not a temple fair.

ये Mamang Dai के “The Sorrow of Women” की पंक्तियाँ हैं, An Obscure Place: Five Survival Lyrics के साथ।

स्त्री-वक्ता एक पुरुष की ओर मुड़ती है: “My love, what shall I do?”

Reference. These lines close Meena Alexander’s “Her Garden,” from House of a Thousand Doors (1988). The speaker is the remembering granddaughter. The “her” is a grandmother never met in life. The form is free verse, private and diasporic, poetry after 1950.

Context. The garden is not a pretty pastoral. Mountains crackle; a cicada bristles and does not sing; mulberry trees, gnarled like hands, start a slide seawards. The speaker imagines the grandmother under the leaves, then claims a unity that skips the living meeting: a woman who died so long before the speaker’s birth that they are one. Monsoon wind is the last fragrance, “a rare fragrance as of dry mulberry.”

Explanation. Death is dryness, wind, and an intimacy without a face-to-face. This is not Naidu’s decorative garden of womanhood and not Dai’s public fire of war. After 1950 the woman’s lyric can be a house of doors and a monsoon. The extract is memory, not a temple fair. Alexander writes originally in English. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still holds.

House of a Thousand Doors (1988) से।

Critically appreciate Narayan’s “Under the Banyan Tree” as a story of oral art and silence.

Or: Critically appreciate Bond’s “The Night Train at Deoli” as a story of passing love.

Model answer

R. K. Narayan is one of the 1930s “big three.” “Under the Banyan Tree” sits in Somal, smaller than Malgudi. Nambi the storyteller lives in the temple porch and, on moonlit nights, takes his seat under the banyan. People come uncalled. He stares at the ground, builds suspense, then unrolls kings, demons and lovers until midnight. The banyan is the public theatre of an oral India. Narayan’s English stays plain; the drama is in the pauses.

The turn is the loss of the gift. Memory snags. He repeats, dries up, sends the crowd home. In the last gathering he tells them there is no story left: the goddess who gave the tales has taken them back. After that he hardly speaks. The artist has become a silent holy remnant. The story is comic in texture and grave in ending. Art here is a man, a tree, a crowd, and a power that can leave.

This is original IWE in Naik’s sense. Beside Bond’s private train window, Narayan is public oral theatre. Nambi’s last act is silence.

“Under the Banyan Tree” सोमल में है, मालगुडी से छोटा।

Or

Ruskin Bond’s “The Night Train at Deoli” is a first-person halt story. A college boy travelling to Dehra sees a girl selling baskets at Deoli, a small station where the train pauses and no one important gets off. He buys a basket, speaks a few words, and looks for her on later journeys. One day she is not there. He never really searches the town. The climate is unfinished desire: a platform, a glance, a life that does not become a plot.

Bond is Eurasian by ancestry, lives in India, and writes in English, so he belongs with Indian Writing in English in Naik’s sense, not with Kipling’s Anglo-Indian shelf. The English is plain. There is no Partition fire and no inner-room violence. Beside Narayan’s public banyan this is a private window.

The girl is not named as the heroine of a novel. The halt is the whole world of the tale. Passing love here is not a wedding and not a rescue. It is a train that will not wait. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still holds.

Ruskin Bond का “The Night Train at Deoli” प्रथम-पुरुष पड़ाव-कथा है।

Q. 4 (8 marks) · Unit 4

Write a note on Jairaj in Dance Like a Man.

Dance Like a Man

Or: Write a note on Ira and hunger in Nectar in a Sieve.

Nectar in a Sieve

Model answer

Jairaj in Mahesh Dattani’s Dance Like a Man (staged 1989) is the son who dances. In the 1990s Bangalore present he is old, drinking, married to Ratna, watching Lata become the dancer Amritlal would not allow a son to be. In memory he is the young man whose father shuts the practice space and buys surrender with the house. The title is spoken at him as a taunt: dance like a man, meaning do not dance.

The ayah’s opium dose that kills an infant so the parents can dance an important night is the secret Jairaj and Ratna share. Lata’s success is pride and theft. Viswas, Lata’s fiancé, must hear this history. Amritlal Patel is dead in the present and fiercely alive in memory: a reformist who will fund a nation and will not fund a dancing son.

Jairaj is punished for not being Amritlal’s idea of a man; Ratna for being too much an artist. After Independence the brown patriarch still uses “what will people say.” Culture is a weapon inside a family. Ira is Markandaya’s daughter; Lata is Dattani’s.

Mahesh Dattani के Dance Like a Man (मंच 1989) में जयराज नाचता बेटा है।

Or

In Kamala Markandaya’s Nectar in a Sieve (1954), Ira is Rukmani and Nathan’s daughter. Married out, she is sent back as barren. In the famine she sells her body so that Kuti, Rukmani’s last infant, may eat; Kuti dies anyway. Later she bears Sacrabani, an albino boy. Hunger writes on the woman’s body after the land and the tannery have already written on the house. Raja is beaten to death for stealing at the tannery. Rain and the zamindar finish the eviction. Nathan dies on the road from the city; Rukmani returns with Puli and Selvam. The farm is not restored.

The title quotes Coleridge: work without hope draws nectar in a sieve. Ira’s bargain is hope that will not hold. Gender here is a returned wife’s shame and a mother’s last store. Mukherjee’s twice-born novel is this English book whose pulse is a woman’s remembered speech. Gandhi is not the engine. Ira is the novel’s daughter; Lata is Dattani’s. Kuti is Rukmani’s infant; Sacrabani is Ira’s son.

Kamala Markandaya के Nectar in a Sieve (1954) में इरा रुक्मणी और नाथन की बेटी है।

The indigo play and Kalam read India through English in two tones. Dinabandhu Mitra writes Nil Darpan in Bengali (1860); Michael Madhusudan Dutt translates it as The Indigo Planting Mirror (1861); James Long publishes and is fined Rs 1,000 and jailed one month. That is translation of a colonial wound, Indian writing through English, not originally IWE in Naik’s sense. The crop is indigo, not tea.

Kalam’s chapter 5 of Ignited Minds (2002) is original English civic prose: patriotism larger than party and sect. Vivekananda, the Rig Veda, Patnaik, Noakhali, Rameswaram. Not Wings of Fire. Only Kalam of this pair sits on Naik’s IWE shelf.

Goluk’s house is the family the factory wants to break; Nobin dies of wounds; Goluk after humiliation. Melodrama carried peasant suffering to Calcutta and, in English, to officials. Sarkar’s caution: elite theatre, real wound. In 1861 English is the ruler’s language used against the ruler’s planters. In 2002 it is one of India’s public languages. Mitra, Dutt and Long remain three jobs. Dattani writes original English drama; Mitra wrote in Bengali. Originally English, Indian writer: only Kalam of this pair meets Naik’s test.

(1860); Michael Madhusudan Dutt The Indigo Planting Mirror (1861); James Long

Wings of Fire नहीं।

Mitra, Dutt, Long तीन काम।

Or

Write an essay on contemporary trends in Indian Writing in English.

Model answer

Contemporary trends in Indian Writing in English name the field after the mid-century moderns, especially after Rushdie (1981). English is no longer only the ruler’s leftover; it is one of India’s languages. The global Indian novel makes history a family plot; Rushdie is a development date, not a set novel. Diaspora and memory appear in Meena Alexander’s “Her Garden.” The woman’s inner room appears in Deshpande’s “The Intrusion.” The Northeast appears in Temsula Ao and Mamang Dai. City theatre appears in Dattani’s Dance Like a Man. Beside original IWE a translation industry carries Indian-language texts into English; Nil Darpan already opens that door.

Poetry after 1950 is the verse hinge of the same map: Ezekiel’s A Time to Change (1952), Kolatkar’s bus, Alexander’s grandmother, Dai’s waiting. Markandaya’s 1954 furrow and Kalam’s civic prose in Ignited Minds, chapter 5, show that contemporary IWE is not only the prize novel. Bond’s Deoli halt remains a small-station English of independent India. Narayan’s Somal is an older climate that the later map still needs as a neighbour.

Naik’s test still closes the essay: originally English, Indian writer. Translation sits beside the definition, not inside it. Many Englishes — village, city, hill, public argument — share one literature. Indo-Anglian is the older name for the same field; Anglo-Indian writing remains Kipling, Forster, Scott. Sarkar’s Bengal Renaissance is the nineteenth-century climate, not a contemporary trend.

Contemporary here means after Independence and especially after the 1970s–80s: inner room, hill-war, city stage, diaspora, civic English. Mehrotra’s anthologies map the poets; Mukherjee maps the novel. Imtiaz Dharker’s migrant city and Agha Shahid Ali’s Kashmir-ghazal are neighbouring dates of the same widening map, though they are neighbouring names, not set lyrics.

Ezekiel 1952, Dattani 1989 and Kalam 2002 date three later climates already on the set pages: spoken verse, city theatre, civic prose. Deshpande and Ao add the woman’s house and the hill. Rushdie dates a turn; the proof of the later map remains these writers. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still holds.

The later map can be dated on the set pages. Ezekiel’s 1952 book dates spoken verse. Dattani’s 1989 play dates a Bangalore living-room where Amritlal will fund a nation and will not fund a son who dances; an ayah’s opium dose is the family’s secret engine. Kalam’s 2002 chapter dates civic English: Vivekananda, the Rig Veda, Patnaik, Gandhi in Noakhali rather than on the Red Fort rampart, Rameswaram’s shared tank. Deshpande’s wedding night and Ao’s dead letter date the inner room and the hill-war.

Contemporary IWE is therefore many Englishes, not one prize style. Rushdie dates a turn in the novel; the proof remains these writers. Translation sits beside Naik’s definition, as Dutt’s English Nil Darpan already shows. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still holds.

शहर-रंगमंच Dattani के Dance Like a Man में है।

A Time to Change (1952), Kolatkar

Q. 2 (20 marks) · Unit 2

Discuss poetry after 1950 with Ezekiel, Kolatkar, Alexander and Dai.

Model answer

Poetry after 1950 keeps Indian matter and changes the music. Ezekiel’s A Time to Change (1952) is the hinge. “Night of the Scorpion,” from The Unfinished Man (1960), is the village proof: rain, peasants, a sceptic father, a mother’s thanks that the sting spared the children. No harp. The book is not The Exact Name (1965). Kolatkar’s “The Bus” opens Jejuri (1976; Commonwealth Poetry Prize 1977) with tarpaulin, spectacles that split a face, a request for a light. Pilgrimage is a state-transport ride; arrival is not communion.

Alexander’s “Her Garden” (House of a Thousand Doors, 1988) and Dai’s “The Sorrow of Women” widen the later shelf beyond Bombay irony: a grandmother never met in life; Arunachal waiting when men talk hunger and fire. Dutt and Naidu remain the early shelf against which this revolt is heard. Spoken sentence, city or dusty road, camera eye: that is the new music. Kipling is the origin of neither shelf. Tagore’s English Gitanjali is self-translation beside them, not a fifth Ezekiel.

Gokak’s treasury is the early room; Bruce King is the later room. King takes Ezekiel, Ramanujan and Moraes as the type of that later room. Ramanujan names the same generation beside Ezekiel. Kolatkar adds the dusty road to a god’s town; Alexander a house of a thousand doors; Dai a survival lyric of Arunachal. The revolt is against picturesque India, not against Indian matter.

The last sound may be the mother’s thanks or the bus asking for a light. After 1950 the Indian poem in English need not sing picturesque India in order to be Indian. Naidu’s silver-and-blue maiden and Dutt’s “Hark” are the music these poets refuse without refusing Indian matter. Rain drives the scorpion indoors; tarpaulin is buttoned against the sun; goats leap cracked garden walls; men talk an unquenchable fire.

Four poets after 1950, not a fifth Naidu. The Unfinished Man is 1960; The Exact Name is 1965 and not the scorpion book. Jejuri is 1976; the Commonwealth Poetry Prize is 1977. House of a Thousand Doors is 1988. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still holds. The hinge year remains 1952.

Walk the four later lyrics as one revolt. Rain drives Ezekiel’s scorpion indoors; peasants name the insect the Evil One; the father tries powder, paraffin, a holy man; after twenty hours the mother thanks God that the poison chose her body. Kolatkar’s state-transport bus is pilgrimage without communion; a divided face in a pair of spectacles is the camera’s joke. Alexander’s garden is not Naidu’s temple-fair colour: goats leap cracked walls, a cicada does not sing, then sparks, and a grandmother who died so long before the speaker’s birth that they are one. Dai’s men talk hunger and fire; the woman already asks, “My love, what shall I do?”

Dutt’s “Hark” and Naidu’s silver-and-blue maiden remain the early music these four refuse without refusing Indian matter. Four poets after 1950, not a fifth Nightingale. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still holds.

Ezekiel की A Time to Change (1952) धुरी है। “Night of the Scorpion,” The Unfinished Man पुस्तक The Exact Name (1965) नहीं।

Alexander का “Her Garden” (House of a Thousand Doors, 1988) और Dai का “The Sorrow of Women” बाद की अलमारी को बंबई-व्यंग्य से आगे फैलाते हैं: जीवन में न मिली दादी; पुरुष जब भूख और आग बात करें तब अरुणाचल प्रतीक्षा।

The Unfinished Man 1960 है; The Exact Name 1965 है और बिच्छू-पुस्तक नहीं। Jejuri 1976 है; Commonwealth Poetry Prize 1977। House of a Thousand Doors 1988 है।

Dai के पुरुष भूख और आग बात करते हैं; स्त्री पहले से पूछती है, “My love, what shall I do?”

Q. 3 (20 marks) · Unit 3

Discuss Ao’s “The Letter” as a Nagaland climate among the short stories.

Model answer

Temsula Ao’s “The Letter,” from Laburnum for My Head (Penguin India, 2009), is Nagaland as a war zone among the short stories. It is not the book’s title-tale of a laburnum grave, and not These Hills Called Home.

Ao writes originally in English; this is Indian Writing in English in Naik’s sense. The English is spare. There is no Malgudi comedy and no Deoli romance. The Northeast enters as household fact, not as folklore colour. Mamang Dai’s “The Sorrow of Women” is the verse neighbour of this hill — Arunachal waiting when men talk hunger and fire — but the story’s job is Nagaland paper in a dead man’s pocket.

The five stories are five climates. Narayan’s Somal is oral village art that can fall silent. Manto’s Amritsar is Partition: Santokh’s Id seviyan, then a nod to masked men; Urdu first, English as translation. Bond’s Deoli is unfinished desire. Deshpande’s wedding night is the inner room. Ao is hill-war. Speech fails here as a dead letter. The underground are Naga insurgents of the story’s war, not Manto’s 1947 mob.

Mukherjee’s twice-born design is the background book for originally English fiction: an Indian inner life told in the school language. Ao needs no Urdu original. Survival is a fee that outlasts the collector. Long Legs must read what the gun cannot. The letter is not a slogan; it is a father’s last ordinary care inside a grey war.

Read among the five, Ao answers why later fiction widened the map beyond Malgudi and the inner room. The hill is not costume. The gunman is not only a type of violence; he is a parent whose son still needs fees. Originally English, Indian writer: Naik’s test still holds. The book date is 2009; the climate is Nagaland, not a second Partition street.

The letter itself is ordinary care inside a grey war. A son writes for examination fees; the collector is already dead; Long Legs must read the paper because the gun cannot. Earlier a beaten householder had asked to keep money for his own son’s fees. Both sides tax the same poor house. Ao’s English stays spare so that the pocket, not a manifesto, is the centre. The book is 2009; the climate is Nagaland, not a second Partition street and not Manto’s seviyan-and-nod evening of 1947.

Temsula Ao का “The Letter,” Laburnum for My Head (Penguin India, 2009) से, छोटी कहानियों में युद्ध-क्षेत्र के रूप में नागालैंड है।

Q. 4 (20 marks) · Unit 4

Discuss eviction, the tannery and the city in Nectar in a Sieve.

Nectar in a Sieve

Model answer

Eviction, the tannery and the city are the three blows of Kamala Markandaya’s Nectar in a Sieve (1954). Rukmani narrates looking back. Married very young to Nathan, a tenant without land of his own, she bears Ira and sons, last Kuti. The tannery arrives with cash, smell and a road. Arjun and Thambi work there, then leave for the tea estates. Raja is beaten to death for stealing in hunger at the tannery. Industry is wages and a corpse. Ira, returned as barren, sells her body in the famine so Kuti may eat; Kuti dies anyway; Sacrabani is born later.

Rain and the zamindar finish the eviction. Nathan never owned. In the city Murugan has vanished; they befriend Puli, an orphan who knows streets; they break stone; Nathan dies on the road home; she returns with Puli and Selvam. The land is not restored. The city is not a rescue; it is the sieve’s next hole.

The title quotes Coleridge: work without hope draws nectar in a sieve. Mukherjee’s twice-born novel is this English book whose pulse is monsoon and a woman’s remembered speech. Gandhi is not the engine. Kenny’s medicine helps and does not stay.

Kuti is Rukmani’s infant; Sacrabani is Ira’s albino son. Ira is the novel’s daughter; Lata is Dattani’s. The tannery belongs here; Bharatanatyam belongs to the play. Beside Nil Darpan a factory again harms a house, but 1860 is indigo and planters, and 1954 is a tannery after Independence.

The three blows are one design: cash that smells, a hut taken back, a city that cannot keep Nathan alive. The return is not restoration. That is the rural novel of industry and loss.

Kunthi blackmails with Kenny’s visits. Ira’s returned barrenness and Kuti’s death are hunger written on women. Puli knows streets; Nathan dies before the farm can be seen again. Eviction, tannery and city are one sieve.

Arjun and Thambi take tannery wages and then the tea estates. Selvam remains with Kenny. Murugan is the son the city swallows. Puli knows streets and is adopted on the road home. Eviction, tannery and city leak through one sieve.

The tannery arrives with cash, smell and a road; Raja’s corpse is industry’s price. Rain and the zamindar finish what Nathan never owned. The city is not a rescue: Murugan has vanished, they break stone, Nathan dies on the road home. Rukmani returns with Puli and Selvam; the land is not restored. Eviction, tannery and city are one design of hope that will not hold.

बेदखली, चमड़ा-कारखाना और शहर Kamala Markandaya के Nectar in a Sieve (1954) के तीन प्रहार हैं।

Q. 5 (20 marks) · Unit 5

Write an essay on Goluk’s house in Nil Darpan / The Indigo Planting Mirror.

Nil Darpan / The Indigo Planting Mirror

Model answer

Goluk Chunder Basu’s house is the family the indigo factory wants to break in Dinabandhu Mitra’s Bengali Nil Darpan (1860), read in Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s English as The Indigo Planting Mirror (1861). Goluk is the householder-ryot; Soirindri his wife; Nobin Madhab the elder son who resists; loyal Torap; planters Wood and Rose; kinsman Ray Churn on the factory’s side. Nobin dies of wounds; Goluk after humiliation and prison; the women are left in wreckage. Ryots were forced to plant indigo instead of food. The crop is indigo, not tea.

James Long publishes the English; he is fined Rs 1,000 and jailed one month. Mitra, Dutt and Long remain three jobs. The play is Bengal Renaissance protest theatre: modern social stage, not a Puranic dance. Melodrama carried peasant suffering to Calcutta and, in English, to a courtroom. Sarkar: elite theatre, real wound.

The play is Indian writing through English, not originally IWE in Naik’s sense. Madhusudan began in English verse and then made Bengali epic — Unit 1’s double tongue — then this translation. Dattani writes original English drama; Mitra wrote in Bengali. Kalam’s Ignited Minds chapter 5 is civic original prose, the other tone of that pairing.

Beside Markandaya the same land and hunger look different: a woman’s memory of tenancy after 1947 versus a factory-play before Gandhi. English readers must watch their own countrymen as villains, not as Kipling’s burden-bearers. Ray Churn shows indigo splitting kin, not only race.

Goluk’s prosperity is what the factory wants. The house ends in deaths, not in a restored pastoral. That is the indigo mirror held up so planters and the capital can see the ryot’s face. The English title is The Indigo Planting Mirror.

Nobin’s wounds and Goluk’s prison are the house broken in public. Soirindri and the other women remain in wreckage. Long’s fine of Rs 1,000 and one month in jail are the numbers that carried the mirror into colonial law. The crop at the centre is indigo.

Indigo disturbances of 1860 are the climate. Mitra writes in Bengali; Dutt Englishes the wound in 1861; Long publishes and is punished. Three jobs, one house destroyed: Nobin’s wounds, Goluk’s prison, women left in wreckage. Indian writing through English, not originally IWE in Naik’s sense.

Soirindri is Goluk’s wife; loyal Torap stands with the house. Planters Wood and Rose and kinsman Ray Churn split the family between factory and hut. Melodrama carried the wound to Calcutta and into a courtroom.

अंग्रेज़ी शीर्षक The Indigo Planting Mirror है।
