Unit 3 in 30 seconds: An ecosystem is a community of living organisms plus their non-living surroundings, working as one functional unit. This unit covers its structure (producers, consumers, decomposers) and function (energy flow, nutrient cycling, succession), food chains, food webs and ecological pyramids — including the famous 10% law — and the main types of ecosystems from forests to estuaries.
1. What is an Ecosystem?
The term "ecosystem" was coined by Arthur Tansley in 1935. "Eco" comes from the Greek word "oikos", meaning "house" — the ecosystem is the "house" where living and non-living things live and interact.
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms (plants, animals, microbes) interacting with their non-living environment (air, water, soil) as one functional unit. Examples: a pond, a forest, a desert, the ocean. The ecosystem is the functional unit of nature.
PYQ Alert:"The term 'ecosystem' was coined by ___." Answer: Arthur Tansley (1935) — asked repeatedly as a one-mark fact.
2. Structure of an Ecosystem
Every ecosystem has two structural components:
Component
Includes
Examples
Biotic (living)
Producers, consumers, decomposers
Plants, animals, bacteria, fungi
Abiotic (non-living)
Climatic factors, soil (edaphic) factors, inorganic and organic substances
Energy flow — energy moves from the sun through producers to consumers (one direction only).
Nutrient cycling — materials like carbon, nitrogen and water keep cycling between living and non-living parts (unlike energy, nutrients are reused).
Ecological succession — the community develops and changes over time toward a stable stage.
Remember the contrast: Energy flows in one direction and is lost as heat; nutrients cycle round and round. This single distinction answers several MCQs.
4. Producers, Consumers and Decomposers
Group
What they do
Examples
Producers (autotrophs)
Make their own food by photosynthesis (photoautotrophs) or from chemicals (chemoautotrophs)
Green plants, algae, phytoplankton; some bacteria
Primary consumers
Herbivores — eat producers directly
Rabbit, deer, grasshopper, cow
Secondary consumers
Small carnivores — eat herbivores
Frog, fox, small fish
Tertiary consumers
Top carnivores — eat other carnivores
Lion, hawk, shark
Omnivores
Eat both plants and animals
Human beings, bear, crow
Decomposers
Break down dead organisms; recycle nutrients back to soil
Bacteria, fungi
Detritivores
Eat detritus (dead organic matter)
Earthworm, millipede
PYQ Alert:"Primary consumers are ___." Answer: Herbivores. And "Decomposers include ___." Answer: bacteria and fungi — both asked multiple times.
5. Food Chains and Food Webs
A food chain is the sequence of "who eats whom" in an ecosystem. Each step is called a trophic level (T1 = producers, T2 = herbivores, and so on).
Grazing food chain: starts from living producers. Example: Grass → Rabbit → Fox → Lion.
Detritus food chain: starts from dead organic matter. Example: Dead leaves → Earthworm → Bird.
In nature, food chains are interconnected — a rabbit is eaten by the fox, the hawk and the snake. This network is called a food web. A food web is more stable than a single food chain: if one food source disappears, the animal can eat something else.
6. Ecological Pyramids
Ecological pyramids (also called Eltonian pyramids, after Charles Elton, 1927) show the number, biomass or energy at each trophic level, with producers at the base and top consumers at the apex:
Pyramid
What it measures
Shape
Pyramid of numbers
Number of organisms at each level
Usually upright; can be inverted (one tree → many insects feeding on it)
Pyramid of biomass
Total dry weight at each level
Usually upright; can be inverted in aquatic systems (phytoplankton biomass < zooplankton at a given time)
Pyramid of energy
Energy at each level per unit time
ALWAYS upright — can never be inverted
The golden rule: The pyramid of energy is always upright because energy is lost as heat at every transfer (second law of thermodynamics). Only the pyramids of numbers and biomass can sometimes be inverted. This is one of the most-asked one-liners in EVS papers.
7. Energy Flow and the 10% Law
Energy enters the ecosystem as sunlight, is captured by producers, and then flows one way only: producers → herbivores → carnivores → decomposers. It never flows back.
In 1942, Raymond Lindeman gave the 10% law:
Lindeman's 10% law: Only about 10% of the energy at one trophic level is transferred to the next level. Roughly 90% is lost as heat through respiration, movement and waste. That is why there are fewer top carnivores than herbivores — and why food chains rarely have more than 4–5 levels.
Fig 3.1 — Pyramid of energy. Only ~10% of energy passes to the next trophic level (Lindeman's 10% law, 1942).
PYQ Alert:"The pyramid of ___ is always upright." Answer: Energy. And "According to the 10% law, the energy transferred to the next trophic level is ___." Answer: 10%.
8. Ecological Succession
Ecological succession is the gradual, directional change in the species of an area over time, leading finally to a stable community.
Type
Starts from
Speed
Example
Primary succession
Bare, lifeless surface (no soil)
Slow
Lava flow, bare rock — pioneers are lichens and mosses
Secondary succession
Disturbed area where soil already exists
Faster
Burnt forest, abandoned farmland
Key terms:
Pioneer species — the first organisms to colonise a bare area (lichens, mosses).
Sere — the series of developmental stages in succession.
Climax community — the final, stable stage of succession (usually a forest).
Hydrosere — succession starting in water (pond → marsh → grassland → forest).
Xerosere — succession starting on dry bare rock (→ forest).
PYQ Alert:"The climax community represents the ___ stage of succession." Answer: final stable stage. "Primary succession starts on ___." Answer: bare rock / lifeless surface.
9. Types of Ecosystems
Ecosystem
Characteristic features
Forest
Layered vegetation (canopy, understory, forest floor); trees dominant; highest biodiversity among terrestrial systems
Grassland
Grasses dominant, few trees; grazing herbivores; adapted to fire and grazing (savanna, prairie, steppe)
Desert
Rainfall below ~25 cm/year; xerophytes (cactus) with water-storing tissues; mostly nocturnal animals; extreme day–night temperature difference
Pond
Small, shallow, still water (lentic); three zones — littoral (shore), limnetic (open water), profundal (deep bottom)
Lake
Larger and deeper than a pond; shows thermal stratification (warm top, cold bottom layers)
River / Stream
Flowing water (lotic); unidirectional flow; high dissolved oxygen
Ocean
Covers ~71% of Earth's surface; high salinity; zones — intertidal, pelagic (open water), benthic (sea floor)
Estuary
Where river meets the sea; brackish water (mix of fresh and salt water); extremely productive; mangroves; nursery ground for fish
PYQ Alert:"Estuary water is ___." Answer: brackish (neither fully fresh nor fully saline). "Still-water bodies like ponds and lakes are called ___." Answer: lentic; flowing water is lotic.
10. Exam Tips — Unit 3
From PYQ analysis (6 papers, 84 Unit-3 questions):
Most asked: Pyramid of energy is always upright; 10% law (Lindeman, 1942); climax community = final stable stage.
