Unit 1: The Multidisciplinary Nature of Environmental Studies — Notes · noteswale
100%
Unit 1 in 30 seconds: Environmental Studies (EVS) is the multidisciplinary study of our environment — everything that surrounds us. This unit covers what "environment" means, its components (living + non-living), the four spheres of the Earth, why EVS connects so many subjects, and why public awareness is the need of the hour.
1. What is Environment?
The word "environment" comes from the French word "environ", meaning "surrounding". Simply put:
Environment = everything that surrounds a living organism and affects its life — air, water, soil, plants, animals, other people, buildings, culture, and even social and economic conditions.
Environment has two main components:
Component
Meaning
Examples
Abiotic (non-living)
Physical and chemical factors
Soil, water, air, temperature, sunlight, minerals
Biotic (living)
All living organisms
Plants, animals, microorganisms, human beings
PYQ Alert (2023):"Soil, water, air and temperature constitute ___." Answer: Physical environment — all four are abiotic components.
2. The Four Spheres of the Earth
Scientists divide our environment into four interconnected spheres:
Fig 1.1 — The four spheres of the Earth. The biosphere is where all four meet — the only sphere with life.
Sphere
What it is
Key fact
Atmosphere
Blanket of air around Earth
78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen
Hydrosphere
All water on Earth
97% ocean water, 3% freshwater
Lithosphere
Earth's crust and upper mantle
Source of soil and minerals
Biosphere
Zone where life exists
Extends from ocean depths to ~10 km in air
PYQ Alert (2023):"The part of the earth which has living organisms is called ___." Answer: Biosphere.
3. What is Environmental Studies (EVS)?
Environmental Studies is the systematic study of our environment — how it works, how humans interact with it, and how we can protect it. It is not a single subject but draws knowledge from many subjects (that's why it's called multidisciplinary).
4. Multidisciplinary Nature of EVS
No single subject can explain the environment fully. EVS borrows concepts and methods from many disciplines:
Fig 1.2 — Environmental Studies sits at the centre, drawing from natural sciences (top) and social sciences (bottom).
Subject
What it contributes to EVS
Biology / Ecology
How living things interact; food chains, ecosystems
Chemistry
Pollutants, chemical reactions in air/water/soil
Physics
Energy, radiation, noise pollution
Geography / Geology
Landforms, climate, minerals, natural resources
Economics
Cost of pollution, sustainable development
Sociology
How communities use resources; environmental movements
Law & Policy
Environmental laws, acts, and policies
5. Scope of Environmental Studies
EVS is useful everywhere — it is not just a college subject:
Education: Builds environmentally responsible citizens from school level.
Industry: Pollution control, waste management, green technologies.
Policy: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) before big projects.
Daily life: Saving water and electricity, waste segregation, plantation.
6. Need for Public Awareness
Laws alone cannot protect the environment — people's participation is essential. That is why the syllabus stresses public awareness:
Most environmental damage (littering, wasting water, pollution) happens due to lack of awareness, not bad intention.
An aware citizen reduces, reuses, recycles and questions harmful practices.
Movements like Chipko (1973) show what aware communities can achieve.
Hon'ble Supreme Court of India has directed that environmental education be compulsory at all levels — that is why you are studying this subject.
One-line takeaway: Environment = our surroundings (living + non-living). EVS studies it using many subjects together. Protecting it needs aware citizens, not just laws.
7. Exam Tips — Unit 1
From PYQ analysis (6 papers, 56 Unit-1 questions):
Most asked: Components of environment — soil, water, air, temperature = physical (abiotic) environment. Asked in 2023 directly.
Definitions: Biosphere / atmosphere / lithosphere / hydrosphere — one definition-based MCQ almost every year.
Multidisciplinary meaning: "EVS draws from many subjects" — asked as concept, not facts.
Trap to avoid: Don't confuse hydrosphere (all water) with biosphere (zone of life). And environment ≠ ecology (ecology is the study of interactions).
Four spheres: atmosphere (air), hydrosphere (water), lithosphere (land), biosphere (life).
EVS is multidisciplinary — borrows from biology, chemistry, physics, geography, economics, sociology, law.
Scope: education, industry, policy (EIA), research, daily life.
Public awareness is essential — laws alone are not enough (Chipko movement example).
Environmental education is compulsory in India (Supreme Court direction).
