Unit 7 in 30 seconds:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the science of making machines that can think and learn like humans. This unit covers the definition of AI (coined by John McCarthy, 1956), its history (Turing Test → AI winters → Deep Blue → AlphaGo → ChatGPT), types of AI (narrow, general, super), the AI vs ML vs Deep Learning relationship, applications, advantages vs disadvantages, and how AI works in your daily life.
1. What is AI?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the branch of computer science that builds machines and software capable of performing tasks that normally require human intelligence — such as understanding language, recognising images, making decisions and learning from experience.
Standard definition: The term "Artificial Intelligence" was coined by John McCarthy in 1956 at the Dartmouth Conference (USA) — the event considered the birth of AI. McCarthy is called the "Father of Artificial Intelligence".
An AI system typically shows one or more of these abilities:
Learning — improving from data and experience (machine learning).
Reasoning — drawing conclusions from facts.
Perception — understanding the world through sensors, cameras, speech.
Language — understanding and generating human language.
Problem-solving — finding the best solution from many options.
2. History of AI — Timeline
Fig 7.1 — Milestones of AI history: 1950 Turing Test, 1956 birth of AI, AI winters, 1997 Deep Blue, 2016 AlphaGo, 2022 ChatGPT.
Exam Tip: Three dates are asked most often — 1950 (Turing Test), 1956 (McCarthy coins "AI" at Dartmouth), and 1997 (Deep Blue beats Kasparov). AI Winter = a period when AI funding and interest collapsed.
The AI Winters:
First AI Winter (1974–1980) — governments cut AI funding after over-promising and under-delivering.
Second AI Winter (1987–1993) — the expert-systems market collapsed; interest fell again.
3. Types of AI
AI is classified by how capable it is:
Type
Also Called
Meaning
Status
Examples
Narrow AI
Weak AI (ANI)
Designed for one specific task
Exists today — all current AI
Siri, Google Maps, spam filters, chess programs
General AI
Strong AI (AGI)
Human-level intelligence across any task
Not yet achieved — research goal
Does not exist yet
Super AI
Superintelligence (ASI)
Smarter than humans in every field
Hypothetical — future/theory
Science fiction (for now)
Key exam point:All AI that exists today is Narrow (Weak) AI — it is brilliant at one task but cannot do anything outside it. General AI and Super AI do not exist yet.
4. AI vs Machine Learning vs Deep Learning
These three terms are often confused. They are nested — each is a subset of the previous one:
Fig 7.2 — AI is the biggest field; Machine Learning is AI that learns from data; Deep Learning is ML using neural networks (used in image and speech recognition).
Artificial Intelligence — the whole field: any machine acting intelligently.
Machine Learning (ML) — AI that learns patterns from data instead of following hand-written rules (e.g., spam filters learning what spam looks like).
Deep Learning (DL) — ML using artificial neural networks with many layers, inspired by the human brain (e.g., face recognition, ChatGPT).
Exam Tip: The favourite MCQ — "Which is a subset of which?" Answer: Deep Learning ⊂ Machine Learning ⊂ Artificial Intelligence. And: neural networks belong to Deep Learning.
5. The Turing Test
In 1950, British mathematician Alan Turing (called the "Father of Computer Science") proposed the Turing Test in his paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence".
How it works: A human judge chats (by text) with a machine and a human without knowing which is which. If the judge cannot reliably tell the machine apart from the human, the machine is said to have passed the test — and to exhibit intelligent behaviour.
6. Applications of AI
Field
How AI is used
Healthcare
Detecting diseases from X-rays/scans, drug discovery, robotic surgery
Education
Personalised learning apps, automatic grading, AI tutors
Recommendation systems — Netflix, YouTube, Spotify suggestions
Transport
Self-driving cars, traffic prediction in Google Maps
Finance
Fraud detection in UPI/card payments, loan-risk scoring
Security
Face recognition, CCTV anomaly detection, cyber-threat monitoring
7. Advantages and Disadvantages of AI
Advantages of AI
Disadvantages of AI
24 × 7 availability — machines never tire
Job displacement — automation replaces routine jobs
Fewer errors — high accuracy in repetitive tasks
High cost — development and hardware are expensive
Handles risky work — bomb disposal, deep-sea, space
No emotions/creativity — cannot truly think or feel
Faster decisions — analyses huge data in seconds
Privacy risk — needs massive personal data
Digital assistants — help in daily tasks and accessibility
Over-dependence — humans may lose skills (navigation, memory)
Consistent quality — same output every time
Misuse risk — deepfakes, autonomous weapons, bias
Exam Tip: This table is a classic 8-mark/essay-style question — "Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of AI." Learn 3 points from each side and you are safe.
8. AI in Day-to-Day Life
You already use AI many times a day — often without noticing:
Voice assistants — Siri, Google Assistant, Alexa answer questions and set reminders.
Google Maps — AI predicts traffic and suggests the fastest route.
Spam filters — Gmail's AI blocks spam and phishing emails automatically.
UPI fraud detection — banks use AI to flag suspicious transactions in real time.
Social media feeds — Instagram/YouTube decide what you see next.
Online shopping — "Customers also bought" recommendations.
Face unlock & photo apps — your phone recognises your face; Google Photos groups pictures by person.
Language tools — Google Translate, grammar checkers, ChatGPT.
Exam-ready line: AI in daily life = assistants, maps, spam filters, fraud detection, recommendations, face unlock and translation. Any one of these is a valid example answer for "AI in our day-to-day life".
9. AI Ethics — A Short Note
Powerful AI raises questions every society must answer:
Bias — AI trained on biased data gives biased results (e.g., unfair hiring tools).
Privacy — AI systems collect huge amounts of personal data.
Deepfakes — AI-generated fake videos can spread misinformation.
Accountability — who is responsible when an AI system (like a self-driving car) causes harm?
Jobs — automation changes the job market; reskilling becomes essential.
Bottom line for the exam: AI = 1956, McCarthy, Dartmouth → machines that learn, reason and perceive → today only Narrow AI exists → DL ⊂ ML ⊂ AI → used in health, education, agriculture, finance → brings efficiency and ethical challenges.
(AI Winters):
Siri, Google Maps,

Google Maps — AI
