Model answer
Modernism names the literary weather of the early twentieth century, especially about 1910–1930, with roots in the 1890s and an afterlife through the Second World War. Edward Albert’s history and Abrams’s glossary agree on the shock: Victorian confidence in progress, empire and a reliable narrator cracks. War, the city, the machine and psychology make old forms feel dishonest. Abrams: a break with inherited realisms; experiment in voice, time, myth and the fragment. The word is not a date-stamp for everything written after 1900. O. Henry’s 1907 twist-story is magazine fiction. Tagore’s “The Postmaster” (1891) belongs under Voices from India.
On this paper the modernist climate is the lyrics and the short story of the war and the years just after. Yeats’s “A Prayer for My Daughter” (1919) is late Yeats: a private ceremony against a public storm. Owen’s “Strange Meeting” is the Great War’s underworld — pity distilled, the enemy as friend — the disillusion Albert places at the centre of the war poets. Mansfield’s “A Cup of Tea” (1922) is the modernist short story of class and appetite in one tight scene. Frost’s two lyrics are modern American speech: apple-picking and snowy woods in a plain voice that still holds symbol. Shaw’s Pygmalion (1912–13) is the Edwardian play of ideas: language as a class-weapon. It shares the century’s social nerve; it is not high modernist fragment-poetry. Auden’s 1939 elegy already looks back on a modernist master from Europe’s “nightmare of the dark.”
The heading fits work that distrusts easy story and easy comfort, that makes form do new work — symbol, a hard lyric line, a broken public faith — and that belongs to the war, the city, or those cracked decades. Golding (1954) has crossed into a later mid-century fable. Zadie Smith is twenty-first-century. Modernism on this paper is Yeats, Owen, Mansfield, Frost, and Shaw as a play of ideas; Auden is the next generation remembering Yeats.
टैगोर का “The Postmaster” (1891) Voices from India के नीचे है।
Yeats की “A Prayer for My Daughter” (1919) उत्तर Yeats है: सार्वजनिक तूफान के विरुद्ध निजी विधि। Mansfield की “A Cup of Tea” (1922) वर्ग और भूख की तंग आधुनिकतावादी कहानी है।

Post Colonialism is the syllabus spacing; Abrams usually writes postcolonial. The heading names both the historical condition after empire and the later critical school that reads literature for colony, race, language and the “writing back” of the formerly colonised. Companions take 1947 and other mid-century independences as political landmarks; later theory titles come after that. On this paper the heading must also cover early anti-colonial writing. Gandhi’s Hind Swaraj is 1909: not “after” the Raj, but already against a civilisation he calls a disease.
Unit 5 is the prescribed Indian map. Chapter 4, “What is Swaraj,” asks what home rule is for: not the English machine with brown clerks, but self-rule of the self and of a different civilisation. Bharati’s “Phoenix,” “Freedom” and “Ode to Freedom” (Nandakumar’s Sahitya Akademi text) are nationalist lyrics of dying and resurgent Bharat. Tagore’s “The Postmaster” is a village under a colonial office: the postmaster is posted, bored, leaves; Ratan remains. That is not a manifesto; it is the human cost of an outpost. Unit 2 adds Thumboo’s “Words”: Singapore, English as a language one must use, question and own after empire. Zadie Smith is a later Black British voice; “Joy” is not a swaraj tract. Shaw’s Pygmalion is class-speech inside England, not the colony. Eliza is not postcolonial because she is taught to talk.
Empire, its language, or its civilisational claim sits on these pages, and a counter-claim for a people, a village or a tongue. Gandhi, Bharati, Tagore and Thumboo carry the heading. Golding’s island is a dystopia of English schoolboys, not a colony’s reply. Yeats’s Ireland is a nation-question inside European modernism, a cousin of nationalist lyric, not Unit 5.

He disappeared in the dead of winter: / The brooks were frozen, the airports almost deserted.”
Or: Explain with reference to the context: “I am the enemy you killed, my friend.”

Model answer
Reference. These are the opening lines of W. H. Auden’s “In Memory of W. B. Yeats,” prescribed in Unit 2 and starred for detailed study. Yeats died in January 1939. The elegy has three sections. This extract is the public weather of section I. The speaker is the elegist, not Yeats in “A Prayer for My Daughter,” and not Owen in the war-tunnel.
Context. Section I treats the day of death as a climate. Snow disfigured the public statues; mercury sank in the mouth of the dying day; the instruments agree that the day of his death was a dark cold day. Far from his illness the wolves ran on through the evergreen forests: nature does not stop. For him it was his last afternoon as himself; the provinces of his body revolted; he became his admirers. Now he is scattered among a hundred cities; the words of a dead man are modified in the guts of the living. Ireland is already in the poem; Europe’s “nightmare of the dark” waits in section III.
Explanation. The extract does two jobs. Allusion: a public man, winter as history, airports as the modern world. Late modernism: the master dies and the thermometer, not the muse, certifies the day. Personification (the dying day, the provinces of the body) and understatement (a few thousand will think of the day as slightly unusual) keep the tone public, not a private sob. The winter opening leads on to “he became his admirers,” then to the limit “poetry makes nothing happen,” and at last to the command to teach the free man how to praise. The three movements belong to one elegy.
ये W. H. Auden की “In Memory of W. B. Yeats” की आरंभिक पंक्तियाँ हैं, इकाई 2, विस्तृत अध्ययन के लिए तारांकित। वक्ता एलीजी-लेखक हैं, “A Prayer for My Daughter” के Yeats नहीं, युद्ध-सुरंग के Owen नहीं।

Reference. The line is spoken in Wilfred Owen’s “Strange Meeting,” the Great War lyric prescribed on this paper in Owen Knowles’s 1999 Wordsworth Editions text. All Unit 2 poems are starred. The first speaker has seemed to escape battle down a profound dull tunnel scooped through granites which titanic wars had groined. Encumbered sleepers groan; one springs up with piteous recognition. They stand in Hell. The other man then names himself.
Context. The stranger continues: I knew you in this dark; for so you frowned yesterday through me as you jabbed and killed. I parried; but my hands were loath and cold. Earlier he has spoken of the pity of war, of the truth untold, of the undone years. Whatever hope is yours was my life also. Owen’s word is pity, not glory. The meeting is strange because the dead enemy is also the friend who shared the same wasted hope. The poem closes: let us sleep now.
Explanation. The extract holds the poem’s conceit in one address: enemy and friend in the same breath. Allusion: an underworld descent, not a second set book of Dante. Irony: official war-language of “the enemy” collapses. After the big words fail, pity is what is left. Dream-hell serves that pity; Owen is not writing Breton’s surrealist chance. The poem does not stamp a nation on the corpse; “the enemy” is the man killed yesterday. The hands loath and cold, and pity as the war lyric’s job, complete the explanation.
Q. 3 (8 marks) · Unit 3
Explain with reference to the context: “We need a technology with a human face.”
We need a technology with a human face.”
Or: Explain with reference to the context: “It is Behrman’s masterpiece — he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell.”
It is Behrman’s masterpiece — he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell.”
Model answer
Reference. The sentence is the title-claim of E. F. Schumacher’s chapter “Technology with a Human Face” in Small Is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered (1973, pp. 146–160), starred prose in Unit 3. The syllabus spelling Schumaker is a misprint. Gandhi is quoted later in the chapter on production by the masses; the extract is not chapter 4 of Hind Swaraj.
Context. Technology tumbles from crisis to crisis because, unlike living nature, it does not know where to stop. It is not self-balancing, self-adjusting, self-cleansing; in nature it acts like a foreign body. Three crises at once: human nature revolts against inhuman organisation; the living environment groans; non-renewable resources, especially fossil fuels, head toward exhaustion. Materialism as limitless expansion in a finite world cannot last. Industry has not solved poverty or unemployment. Watching computers, technology seems to lighten work; watching whole societies, leisure tends to sit in inverse proportion to labour-saving machinery. Actual producers are a tiny share of total social time (about three and a half per cent). Prestige goes to those farthest from production. Marx: too many useful things, too many useless people.
Explanation. The extract is therefore a question against giantism. The later pages name the opposite goal: raise productive time, first-class tools, Gandhi’s production by the masses, intermediate technology — vastly superior to the primitive, cheaper than the rich world’s super-technology. Two attitudes will decide the future: the forward stampede and the home-comers. Small is beautiful because man is small. The human face is size, skill and the democracy of tools, not kindness in the abstract. Unit 5’s Hind Swaraj is a different Gandhi page: the soul of home rule, not intermediate tools.
वाक्य E. F. Schumacher के अध्याय “Technology with a Human Face” का शीर्षक-दावा है, Small Is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered (1973, पृ. 146–160), इकाई 3 का तारांकित गद्य।

Reference. The line is the close of O. Henry’s “The Last Leaf,” starred short story in Unit 3. Sue speaks to Johnsy after the old painter Behrman has died of pneumonia. The syllabus readings print Maugham; the author is O. Henry. The scene is Greenwich Village: two young women artists, an ivy vine on the opposite wall.
Context. Johnsy has counted the falling ivy leaves and made a bargain with death: when the last leaf goes, she will go. The doctor wants her to want to live. Sue weeps and works. Behrman, who drinks, talks of a masterpiece he will paint someday, and poses as a model, scoffs at the foolishness of dying because of leaves. A storm night; morning; one leaf still clings. Johnsy’s will returns. Then Behrman is found soaked and icy, a palette and a lantern below the wall. The last leaf had fallen in the night; the one they see is paint.
Explanation. The extract turns a weather-symbol into labour and love. While the leaf was taken for nature it meant hope; when it is known as art it still means hope, and now also sacrifice. Irony, O. Henry’s twist: the masterpiece is not a gallery canvas but a leaf that had to fool a dying girl. The marvel is paint, not magic realism: the story supplies the realist explanation. Johnsy, Sue and Behrman stand on the page, and Behrman dies of the same pneumonia. The vine, the wall and the old man are this paper’s O. Henry.
Irony, ओ.

Midnight, Wimpole Street, after the ball. Higgins and Pickering congratulate themselves: the trick worked; they are tired; they want slippers and bed. Eliza is silent, then blazing. She has won their bet for them and is not even thanked. She is a lady with nowhere to go. She throws the slippers. Higgins is astonished that the creature has feelings. She asks what is to become of her — the question Mrs Pearce asked in Act II and Mrs Higgins in Act III. He suggests marriage or a florist’s shop. She is an object that has been finished and is now in the way. Pickering is kinder and still does not see that the experiment was done on a person. Eliza puts the jewels back and leaves. Freddy is on the pavement. She goes into the night with him, not yet into a settled plot.
Ovid’s sculptor wanted a wife; this sculptor wants his slippers. The play of ideas is sharpest here: class is not only vowels; it is who gets thanked, who owns the success, who may sit by the fire. Higgins’s cruelty in this act is absent-mindedness plus vanity, not a secret love-plot. Eliza’s anger is the beginning of a self that is not a duchess-puppet. Comedy of manners is a cousin — the codes of the house — but the scene is argument, not only etiquette.
Act V still remains: Doolittle in wedding clothes, and Eliza’s thanks to Pickering for treating her as a lady. The statue has spoken; the idea-play asks who the masterpiece belongs to.
Or
A play of ideas is argument on stage, not only plot. Shaw’s five rooms — Covent Garden; the Wimpole Street laboratory; Mrs Higgins’s at-home; after the ball; independence — argue whether a person is a voice, a class, or a will. Higgins’s science can drill a duchess-surface in three months. Mrs Pearce and Mrs Higgins ask the moral nerve: a made lady cannot go back to violets, and the maker has not thought of a life. Doolittle sells five pounds of the undeserving poor; Act V makes him “respectable” because Higgins wrote to an American millionaire that he was England’s most original moralist. Middle-class morality is a trap as well as a ladder. Eliza’s last self-possession is not the vowels: she thanks Pickering for treating her as a lady. That treatment, she says, made the difference. She can teach phonetics or marry Freddy and keep a shop. The curtain does not kiss. The sequel is Freddy, a flower shop, Higgins a bachelor of tantrums.
Comedy of manners is a cousin: drawing-room codes, the at-home disaster of “they done her in.” Allusion to Pygmalion and Galatea is the title’s glance, reversed when the statue refuses. Eliza is Cockney London, not a colony; Pickering’s India is a scholar’s travel, not Tagore’s village. Edwardian social nerve sits beside Mansfield’s 1922 cup of tea: both show charity as appetite; Shaw lets the girl keep a trade.
The idea-play is the shilling lessons, the five pounds, “they done her in,” the slippers, treated as a lady, Freddy not Higgins, and Higgins not Pickering as the letter-writer.
Comedy of manners रिश्तेदार है: बैठक की संहिता, at-home की विपत्ति “they done her in।”
विचार-नाटक है शिलिंग पाठ, पाँच पाउंड, “they done her in,” चप्पल, लेडी जैसा व्यवहार, Freddy न कि Higgins, और पत्र-लेखक Higgins न कि Pickering।
Q. 5 (8 marks) · Unit 5
Write a note on Gandhi’s “What is Swaraj?” (Hind Swaraj, chapter 4).
गाँधी के “What is Swaraj?”
Or: Why is Bharati’s “Phoenix” two panels? Write a critical note (Bharat Dying and Resurgent Bharat).
आलोचनात्मक टिप्पणी लिखिए (Bharat Dying and Resurgent Bharat)।
Model answer
Hind Swaraj (1909) is a dialogue: Reader and Editor. Chapter 4 is short. The Reader has heard of Congress and Partition and unrest; he wants the Editor’s Swaraj. Many mouths say “drive the English out” without asking why. If we got all we wanted, would we still need to drive them away? The Reader wants only that they leave. After withdrawal he would keep their constitution, army and government. Why drive them? They impoverish India, take money, reserve posts, keep us in slavery, behave insolently. The Editor tests him: if they stopped taking money, became gentle, gave responsible posts — still harmful? The Reader says it is like asking whether a tiger is safe if he changes his nature. Self-government like Canada or South Africa is useless until we have the same powers: flag, navy, army, splendour, a voice that rings through the world.
The Editor’s sentence: we want English rule without the Englishman. You want the tiger’s nature, but not the tiger. You would make India English; and when it becomes English, it will be called not Hindustan but Englistan. This is not the Swaraj that I want. The Reader would copy Spencer, Mill and the Mother of Parliaments. The Editor asks for patience: he will show that what the Reader calls Swaraj is not truly Swaraj. The rest of the book — civilisation, lawyers, doctors, railways — is not this chapter.
The chapter is Unit 1’s early anti-colonial writing. Swaraj here is a political-ethical refusal of Englistan, not a lyric symbol. Beside Bharati’s shout, Gandhi is cool dialogue. Beside Schumacher, the economist quotes Gandhi on production by the masses; this page is the soul of home rule, not intermediate tools. Reader, Editor, tiger, Englistan: that is chapter 4.

Subramania Bharati’s “Phoenix (Bharat Dying and Resurgent Bharat)” is starred in Unit 5, in Prema Nandakumar, Poems of Subramania Bharati, Sahitya Akademi. The syllabus prints Subramaniam; the poet is Subramania Bharati (1882–1921), Tamil nationalist, writing from Ettayapuram and from Pondicherry exile. The lyric is not a Greek classroom myth for its own sake. Bharat is the bird that burns and the bird that rises. The two-part subtitle is the map of the lyric.
Bharat Dying is the first panel: the mother-land under foreign rule, a body that looks finished — famine, fear, a people who have learned to live as slaves. The tone is lament for a nation, not Yeats’s private cradle in “A Prayer for My Daughter.” Resurgent Bharat is the second panel: the weak-shouldered mannikin and the shrunken heart are driven away; shining eyes, a steely heart, honeyed speech, the broad-shouldered Titan are called. Unit 1’s symbolism at national scale: death is not the last fact if the bird’s nature is to return.
Beside Gandhi’s Englistan, Bharati’s rising is not a copy of English splendour; it is a Tamil-Indian dawn. Beside Tagore’s quiet village, this lyric is public and militant in feeling. The set “Freedom” is the tear-watered crop (p. 70); “Thirst for Freedom” (p. 73) is the next poem in Nandakumar, not on this list. Both panels belong in the note: dying plus rising.
सुब्रह्मण्य भारती की “Phoenix (Bharat Dying and Resurgent Bharat)” इकाई 5 में तारांकित है, Prema Nandakumar, Poems of Subramania Bharati, साहित्य अकादेमी।
स्वर राष्ट्र का शोक है, Yeats के “A Prayer for My Daughter” के निजी पालने नहीं।

Discuss the age and movements of this paper — Modernism, Post Modernism, Magic Realism, Existentialism, Surrealism, Harlem Renaissance, Post Colonialism — with reference to the prescribed texts.
Model answer
The title of the course is 20th Century Literature. Unit 1’s official movements still have to hold a 1891 Tagore story, a 1909 Gandhi chapter, a 1954 Golding novel and a 2018 Smith essay. Dates are a guide, not a cage: they stop Harlem being placed on Golding’s island, magic realism on Behrman’s painted leaf, or postmodernism on Pygmalion. Meanings follow Abrams and Harpham (2011) and Albert (1975). Stream of consciousness, dystopia, allusion and symbolism are tools that can sit inside more than one climate. Each heading below is seated on a prescribed page of this paper.
Modernism is about 1910–1930: broken old forms, war, inner mind, hard lyric. Yeats 1919, Owen’s underworld, Mansfield 1922, Frost’s plain-speech lyrics, Shaw as a play of ideas, Auden remembering Yeats from 1939. It is not O. Henry’s twist and not Tagore’s village tale. The Harlem Renaissance is 1920s Harlem, New Negro arts, Locke 1925; no Harlem author is set. It is modernism’s American Black city-voice, parallel to Yeats’s Ireland, not a copy, and not Unit 5’s India. Surrealism is Breton 1924: dream as method. Illustrations only: Owen’s dream-hell still serving pity; Thomas’s dream-time still serving elegy for youth. Frost’s woods are waking.
Existentialism peaks in the 1940s–50s: choice, anxiety, no ready meaning. Golding’s island is the laboratory — existence first, conch or hunt, Simon’s knowledge that the beast is them, an officer who returns the boys to a larger war. Owen’s “enemy you killed, my friend” and Frost’s choice at the edge of the lovely dark are related glances. Gandhi’s swaraj is ethical-political, not Sartre. Magic Realism is marvel told as ordinary fact, the Latin American stock school. “The Last Leaf” is an explained trick; Golding’s beast is psychology. The list does not set a textbook instance; the two contrasts show that the word has been understood.
Post Modernism, from the 1960s, doubts one grand story and mixes registers. The set page is thin: Smith’s “Joy” and Thumboo’s “Words” are glances, not a second Golding. 1945 is not a stamp on every later page. Post Colonialism must cover early anti-colonial writing as well as later theory: Gandhi chapter 4 (Englistan is not Swaraj), Bharati’s phoenix and freedom lyrics, Tagore’s outpost, Thumboo’s inherited English. Shaw’s Eliza is Cockney London, not a colony. Golding is English schoolboys, not writing back.
The map closes on the tools and the climates together. Tools: stream of consciousness (Frost, Thomas, Mansfield as cousins), dystopia (Golding), allusion (Shaw’s title, Yeats’s Helen, Owen’s underworld, Beelzebub), symbolism (conch, leaf, woods, horn). Climates: Modernism on the war-and-after lyrics and Mansfield; Harlem as a glossary movement without a set author; Surrealism as definition plus Owen and Thomas; Existentialism on the island; Magic Realism as a term the explained leaf does not earn; Post Modernism as a thin later glance; Post Colonialism on Gandhi, Bharati, Tagore and Thumboo. Each heading is defined from Abrams and seated on a prescribed page of this paper.
“The Last Leaf” समझाई चाल है; गोल्डिंग का beast मनोविज्ञान है।
Q. 2 (20 marks) · Unit 2
Discuss the prescribed twentieth-century lyrics — Auden, Dylan Thomas, Frost, Thumboo, Owen and Yeats.
Model answer
Unit 2 sets six names, all starred: Auden’s “In Memory of W. B. Yeats”; Dylan Thomas’s “Fern Hill”; Frost’s “After Apple-Picking” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”; Edwin Thumboo’s “Words”; Owen’s “Strange Meeting”; Yeats’s “A Prayer for My Daughter.” The named Owen book is Owen Knowles (Wordsworth Editions, 1999). Albert’s war-and-after climate and Abrams’s terms — allusion, symbolism, the modernist break — are the tools.
Auden (1939) buries Yeats in winter: frozen brooks, empty airports, wolves in evergreen forests, a man who became his admirers. Section II limits art — “poetry makes nothing happen” — and still calls verse a mouth that survives. Section III, ceremonial, lays the Irish vessel to rest and then looks at Europe’s barking dogs: follow, poet, teach the free man how to praise. The elegy is public modernism remembering a master. Yeats’s 1919 prayer is the earlier private ceremony: storm on tower and elms; Helen unlucky, the spray-born queen’s bandy-legged smith, Maud Gonne’s angry-wind bellows; then linnet, laurel, custom and ceremony. Auden’s elegy and Yeats’s prayer are a pair, not one poem. Auden writes after the death; the prayer is spoken before the child wakes.
Owen’s tunnel is the war’s underworld. Out of battle into granites titanic wars had groined; sleepers; piteous recognition; “I am the enemy you killed, my friend.” Pity, not glory; enemy and friend in one breath; hands loath and cold. Allusion is the descent; after official meaning fails, pity remains. Thomas’s “Fern Hill” is not a trench. It is green-gold childhood already held by Time, singing in chains like the sea — colour-symbol, elegy of youth, dream-syntax that still serves mourning. Frost’s two lyrics are American speech doing symbol; they are not one snow. “After Apple-Picking”: drowsiness, ice-pane, woodchuck sleep in the cellar bin, a harvest that weighs. “Stopping by Woods”: woods lovely, dark and deep against promises and miles, the last line twice so sleep can mean night and death. A waking choice at the edge of the dark.
Thumboo’s “Words” is the unit’s postcolonial lyric: English as a tongue inherited, used, argued, owned after empire. Simple words twist; a polite message becomes “He won’t”; we make words into poems. The lyric is language after empire, not Shaw’s Cockney drill. The set has three jobs at once. War and ceremony in Europe and Ireland (Owen, Auden, Yeats). Time, farm, woods and sleep in Thomas and Frost. Words as history in Thumboo. Symbolism is the shared craft: winter weather, green and gold, woods, horn and laurel, the enemy’s address. Allusion is the shared glance: Yeats the public man, Helen, an underworld, a forest that feels like a tale without naming one.
All six names sit under Unit 1’s tools. Auden’s limit still ends in praise. Owen’s enemy is the man killed yesterday. Fern Hill remains an elegy of youth, not Breton’s chance. The woods remain a waking choice, not a dystopia. Thumboo’s English after empire is the unit’s third job beside war-ceremony and Time-woods. The lyrics close as: teach the free man how to praise; green and dying; miles to go; the enemy my friend; custom and ceremony; we make them into poems.
इकाई 2 छह नाम निर्धारित करती है, सब तारांकित: Auden की “In Memory of W. B. Yeats”; Dylan Thomas का “Fern Hill”; फ्रॉस्ट के “After Apple-Picking” और “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”; Edwin Thumboo का “Words”; Owen की “Strange Meeting”; Yeats की “A Prayer for My Daughter।”
युद्ध से निकल कर ग्रेनाइट में, जिसे टाइटन युद्धों ने खोदा; सोए; दयनीय पहचान; “I am the enemy you killed, my friend।”
Q. 3 (20 marks) · Unit 3
Lord of the Flies as a dystopia of the pack: discuss the novel with its chief symbols.
Model answer
William Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954; named reprint UBSP Publishers, 2007) is this paper’s long fiction and Unit 1’s set dystopia. A dystopia, in Abrams, is a bad place imagined as a whole society, the opposite of utopia. Schoolboys, crashed, without adults, try to be a British assembly and become a hunt. It is not a police-state novel; it is the pack. Piggy is named by the others. The symbols that carry the plot are the conch, fire, glasses, painted face, parachutist, pig’s head, Simon, Roger’s lever, and the officer.
The conch is assembly and a fragile order: whoever holds it may speak. When it explodes under Roger’s boulder at Castle Rock, the talking-game is over. Fire is double: the rescue-smoke on the mountain, then the island fired to smoke Ralph out. Piggy’s glasses are sight, science, the power to light fire; stealing them is stealing reason. Painted faces unbind shame for the hunt. The first beast is a dead parachutist on the mountain; fear makes a god of a corpse. The pig’s head on a stick — the lord of the flies, Beelzebub in English — speaks to Simon in fever: the beast is them. That is existential recognition. Existence first: they were thrown here. The conch was a chosen rule, not a law of nature. Jack’s choir-turned-hunters are another choice. Allusion in the title is brief.
Simon is the one who knows and is killed in the dance, mistaken for the beast. Piggy, the true wise friend, is killed when the conch dies: he falls forty feet to the rock in the sea. Ralph is hunted like a pig. He stumbles onto the beach at the feet of a naval officer who is embarrassed that a pack of British boys could not put up a better show. Ralph weeps for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and Piggy’s fall. A cruiser waits. The grown world is still at war. Dystopia does not end when the adult arrives; the laboratory is only closed. The island was not an exception to England; it was England without the uniform.
Among Unit 1’s tools the novel is dystopia plus symbol plus an existential test. The talking head is fever and symbol, then a pig and a corpse. The date 1954 is a mid-century fable. The boys are English schoolboys, not a colony writing back. Golding’s inhuman face is the choir with spears.
Innocence ends; the darkness of man’s heart remains; the true wise friend falls through the air. The order of ruin is the conch, the glasses, pity, then the show the officer wanted and did not get. Dystopia includes the cruiser.
Q. 4 (20 marks) · Unit 4
Discuss Shaw’s Pygmalion as prescribed on this paper: acts, ideas, and the ending Shaw printed.
Model answer
G. B. Shaw’s Pygmalion (staged 1913; printed 1916) is the only drama on this paper. It is a play of ideas: class, speech, and what a person is, argued in talk. Unit 1 uses the title as allusion to Ovid. Five rooms carry the argument. Act I, Covent Garden: rain, portico, Eliza’s violets, Higgins the note-taker, Pickering from India, the boast about a duchess in three months, coins, Wimpole Street. The street is the social map: who waits under stone, who sells flowers in the wet, who writes down other people’s sounds as specimens. Act II, the laboratory: lamps, phonograph, Mrs Pearce. Eliza will pay a shilling, her proportion of a millionaire’s fee. Pickering bets the cost. Higgins treats her as a squashed cabbage leaf. Mrs Pearce asks what becomes of the girl when the joke is over. Alfred Doolittle wants five pounds, not fifty: he is the undeserving poor and likes it. The contract is speech, money, no love-plot yet.
Act III, Mrs Higgins’s at-home: magnificent Eliza, weather, influenza, then “they done her in.” New vowels, old facts. Clara hears fashion; Freddy is enchanted; Mrs Eynsford Hill is stricken. The ambassador’s garden party happens between III and IV; some later printings add an embassy scene. The point is that the world accepts a voice. Act IV, midnight: slippers, no thanks, “what is to become of me,” jewels put back, Freddy on the pavement. Ovid reversed: the statue speaks; the sculptor wants bed. Act V, next morning: Eliza self-possessed; Doolittle in wedding clothes, victim of a letter Higgins wrote; she thanks Pickering for lady-treatment; she can teach or marry Freddy. Higgins still calls her his masterpiece and still, in his mind, wants slippers fetched. Shaw’s afterword is explicit: she marries Freddy Eynsford Hill; they open a flower shop; Higgins remains a bachelor of science and tantrums. The printed close is not a kiss.
Can a person be separated from a class-voice? Higgins says he treats everyone the same, which is not respect. Pickering’s courtesy does more than the drills. Doolittle proves that money plus “morality” can imprison as well as raise. Eliza’s independence is economic and verbal: she can sell the teaching she was given. Comedy of manners is the drawing-room cousin; the play of ideas is the argument. Allusion is the title; the slippers are comfort the men own. Eliza is Cockney London, not a colony; Pickering’s Sanskrit book is not Tagore’s post office. It is not a romance whose prize is the professor.
Acts IV and V carry the reversal. Mrs Pearce, the five pounds, the later bequest, “they done her in,” and the letter-writer — Higgins, not Pickering — stand in the middle of the argument. Eliza walks from violets to self-possession: a lady is made by how she is treated, not only by how she sounds. Higgins remains genius, vanity, and a missing life-plan. The ending is Shaw’s sequel, a shop of her own, a phonograph without a wife.
The set play, then, is portico, shilling, five pounds, at-home slang, slippers, treated as a lady, Freddy, and no kiss.
अंक III, मिसेज़ Higgins का at-home: शानदार Eliza, मौसम, इन्फ्लुएंज़ा, फिर “they done her in।”
मिसेज़ Pearce, पाँच पाउंड, बाद की वसीयत, “they done her in,” और पत्र-लेखक — Higgins, Pickering नहीं — तर्क के मध्य में खड़े हैं।
Q. 5 (20 marks) · Unit 5
Voices from India: Gandhi, Bharati and Tagore as prescribed on this paper.
Voices from India:
Model answer
Unit 5 is three voices. Gandhi, “What is Swaraj?” — chapter 4 of Hind Swaraj (Navajivan / Mehrotra). Subramania Bharati (the syllabus prints Subramaniam), three lyrics in Nandakumar’s Sahitya Akademi text: “Phoenix,” “Freedom,” “Ode to Freedom” — starred. Tagore, “The Postmaster,” Radice Penguin pp. 10–18 — starred. Acharya Nandkishore’s Swaraj, Aadhar aur Aayam is recommended climate, not a fourth set book. Postcolonialism, as Unit 1 uses the heading, covers this early writing. Schumacher’s Gandhi quotation in Unit 3 is not this chapter.
Gandhi’s chapter is dialogue. The Reader wants the English gone and their machine left behind — flag, navy, splendour, Spencer and Mill. The Editor names that desire Englistan: English rule without the Englishman, the tiger’s nature without the tiger. That is not the Swaraj he wants. Cool, short, ethical-political. Bharati is the shout beside that coolness. Phoenix is two panels: Bharat dying under foreign rule, then the weak-shouldered mannikin driven away and the Titan called. “Freedom” (p. 70, not “Thirst” p. 73) is the crop raised with tears, not water, and the prayer for the boon ere long. The Ode worships Freedom Mother from the dungeon: hearth-joys lost, gloom in place of cheer, ten million troubles — I shall not forget to worship thee. Allusion to the phoenix is classical; the job now is Indian resurgence, decades before 1947. Tagore is neither dialogue nor ode. Ulapur, indigo, a shed, Ratan, lessons, Dada, transfer, a laugh, refused coins, a river-boat, a practical man. The outpost of the system does not see the girl. He is a homesick Bengali clerk, not Higgins and not a cartoon Raj. The cruelty is ordinary.
The three voices read as one triangle. Gandhi refuses Englistan as a false home-rule. Bharati wants a resurgent people who are not that English copy — the Titan is not the Reader’s navy-splendour. Tagore shows what a small office of the same system does to one child when a transfer comes: no phoenix rises on that bank.
Each voice then takes concrete detail: Englistan; mannikin, tears and dungeon; Ulapur and the boat. “Freedom” is the tear-watered crop (p. 70), not “Thirst for Freedom” (p. 73). Ratan is a girl in a shed before she is an allegory of India. Englistan is the sentence chapter 4 is built on.
Voices from India on this paper are therefore Reader and Editor; dying and resurgent Bharat; the tear-crop and the Mother in the dark; Ratan, Dada and the boat. The tones are dialogue, dungeon-worship and river.
गाँधी, “What is Swaraj?” टैगोर, “The Postmaster,” Radice Penguin पृ. 10–18 — तारांकित।
