Unit 6: Social Issues and the Environment — Notes · noteswale
100%
Unit 6 in 30 seconds: This unit is about how human society interacts with the environment — the shift from unsustainable to sustainable development (Brundtland, 1987; three pillars), urban energy problems, water conservation (rainwater harvesting, watershed management), resettlement & rehabilitation, environmental ethics, ozone depletion & nuclear accidents, wasteland reclamation, consumerism, the five major Environmental Protection Acts, enforcement issues and public awareness. The heaviest unit in the paper: 120 of 600 PYQs.
1. From Unsustainable to Sustainable Development
Unsustainable development meets today's needs by borrowing from tomorrow — overusing resources, burning fossil fuels, cutting forests faster than they regrow. Sustainable development does the opposite:
"Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." — the Brundtland Commission, Our Common Future (1987). This single definition is asked again and again: learn the year (1987) with it.
Sustainable development stands on three pillars — all three must be balanced:
Fig 6.1 — The three pillars of sustainable development. True sustainability lies where all three overlap — growth that is green and fair.
Pillar
Means
Example
Environmental
Protect nature; don't exhaust resources
Solar energy instead of coal
Economic
Growth that lasts; efficient use of resources
Green jobs, circular economy
Social
Equity — benefits reach everyone, including future generations
Fair wages, inclusive policies
PYQ Alert: The UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in 2015 under the 2030 Agenda. Number + year + agenda name — all three get asked.
2. Urban Problems Related to Energy
Rapid urbanization concentrates people, vehicles and industries — and therefore energy demand. The linked problems:
Buildings: heating, cooling and lighting consume huge electricity; concrete jungles create the urban heat island (cities hotter than surrounding countryside).
Waste & water: dense populations generate mountains of solid waste and strain water supply.
Slums: unplanned growth leaves the poor without clean energy, sanitation or green space.
Solutions: efficient public transport, energy-efficient buildings, rooftop solar, and urban green spaces that cool the city naturally.
3. Water Conservation, Rainwater Harvesting and Watershed Management
Only about 2.5% of Earth's water is freshwater — and most of that is locked in glaciers and ice caps. India faces falling groundwater levels, so conservation is a survival issue:
Method
How it works
Rainwater harvesting
Collect rain from rooftops → pass through a filter → store in tanks or recharge groundwater (see Fig 6.2)
Watershed management
Manage the entire drainage area (watershed): check dams, contour bunding and afforestation slow runoff so water soaks into the ground
Drip irrigation
Water delivered drop-by-drop to plant roots — minimal wastage in agriculture
Traditional systems
Johads (Rajasthan) — community-built ponds that recharge groundwater; revived successfully in Alwar district
One-line logic: a watershed is the area that drains into one stream or river. Manage the watershed (slow the water, trap the soil) and you automatically conserve both water and soil.
4. Resettlement and Rehabilitation Issues
Large projects — dams, mines, industries — displace thousands of people, mostly tribal and poor communities. The issues:
Loss of land and livelihood — compensation is often cash that runs out, not replacement land.
Cultural displacement — communities lose ancestral homes, forests and identity.
Delays and injustice — rehabilitation reaches people years late, if at all.
Landmark example: the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada river displaced lakhs of people; the Narmada Bachao Andolan (led by Medha Patkar) fought for fair rehabilitation — a classic case of development vs. displacement asked in exams.
5. Environmental Ethics
Environmental ethics is the moral relationship between humans and nature — it asks not "what can we do to nature?" but "what should we do?"
Core idea: nature has intrinsic value — worth protecting even when it has no direct use for humans. Key principles: respect for all life, intergenerational equity (future generations have rights too), the polluter pays principle, and the precautionary principle (act against harm even without full scientific proof).
6. Ozone Layer Depletion and Nuclear Accidents
The ozone layer (in the stratosphere) absorbs harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons — used in old refrigerators, ACs and aerosols) release chlorine that destroys ozone, creating the ozone hole over Antarctica.
Effects of depletion: more UV reaches Earth → skin cancer, cataracts, damage to crops and marine life.
PYQ Alert: The Montreal Protocol (1987) is the international treaty that phased out CFCs — called the most successful environmental treaty ever. Ozone Day: 16 September. Don't confuse it with the Brundtland report — both are 1987, but one is about ozone, the other about sustainable development.
Nuclear accidents (revision from Unit 5 — they appear here in the syllabus too): Three Mile Island (1979, USA), Chernobyl (1986, Ukraine/USSR — worst ever), Fukushima (2011, Japan). Cause: reactor failure releasing radiation; effects: cancer, genetic damage across generations.
7. Wasteland Reclamation, Consumerism and Waste Products
Wasteland = degraded land unfit for use — mined-out areas, saline soils, eroded ravines. Reclamation brings it back: afforestation, soil treatment, filling mine pits, agroforestry.
Consumerism (buy-use-throw culture) is the engine of waste: excessive packaging, fast fashion, and e-waste — the fastest-growing waste stream. The antidote, from Unit 5: conscious consumption and the 4R hierarchy.
8. Environmental Protection Acts
Five acts, five years — the single most PYQ-heavy table of this unit. Learn it as a year ladder: 1972 → 1974 → 1980 → 1981 → 1986:
Act
Year
Purpose
Wildlife (Protection) Act
1972
Protects wild animals, birds and plants; bans hunting; Project Tiger (1973) launched under it
Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act
1974
Controls water pollution; set up the CPCB and State Boards
Forest (Conservation) Act
1980
Restricts diversion of forest land for non-forest use (needs central approval)
Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act
1981
Controls air pollution; extended CPCB/SPCB powers to air
Environment (Protection) Act
1986
Umbrella legislation after the Bhopal tragedy — covers all environmental protection
Traps to avoid:Forest Conservation = 1980 (not 1972 — that's Wildlife); Air Act = 1981 (not 1974 — that's Water). The EPA 1986 came after Bhopal (1984) — that cause→effect link is asked directly.
9. Enforcement Issues and Public Awareness
Enforcement issues — why good laws still fail: weak implementation, shortage of staff and funds, corruption, slow courts, and penalties too small to deter violators.
Public awareness fills the gap. Milestones to remember:
Chipko Movement (1973), Uttarakhand — villagers hugged trees to stop felling; led by Sunderlal Bahuguna.
Ramsar Convention (1971), Iran — for the conservation of wetlands; World Wetlands Day: 2 February.
Project Tiger (1973) — launched at Jim Corbett National Park, India's first tiger reserve.
Stockholm Conference (1972) — the first major UN environment conference; World Environment Day: 5 June.
PYQ Alert:NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) is headed by the Prime Minister — a favourite one-line MCQ.
10. Exam Tips — Unit 6
From PYQ analysis (6 papers, 120 Unit-6 questions — the heaviest unit):
Year ladder: Ramsar 1971 → Wildlife 1972 → Chipko & Project Tiger 1973 → Water Act 1974 → Forest Conservation 1980 → Air Act 1981 → EPA 1986 → Brundtland & Montreal 1987.
Brundtland (1987) = sustainable development definition (Our Common Future).
Montreal Protocol (1987) = ozone layer / CFC phase-out. Same year, different topic — examiners love this confusion.
NDMA is headed by the Prime Minister.
Ramsar Convention = wetlands (1971, Iran).
Project Tiger = 1973, Jim Corbett; launched under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Chipko = 1973, Uttarakhand, Sunderlal Bahuguna — tree-hugging against felling.
Ozone layer is in the stratosphere; CFCs destroy it; depletion → skin cancer, cataracts.
Trap: "Water Act" and "Air Act" years get swapped in options — Water = 1974, Air = 1981.
11. Key Points — Revise in 2 Minutes
Sustainable development = Brundtland, 1987, Our Common Future; three pillars: environment, economy, society.
SDGs: 17 goals, 2015, 2030 Agenda.
Urban problems: transport emissions, urban heat island, waste, slums.
