Unit 5: Environmental Pollution — Notes · noteswale
100%
Unit 5 in 30 seconds:Pollution is the addition of harmful substances or energy to the environment in quantities that damage life. This unit covers the definition, causes, effects and control measures of seven types — air, water, soil, marine, noise, thermal pollution and nuclear hazards — plus solid waste management, the role of the individual in prevention, and disaster management (flood, earthquake, cyclone, landslide). Second-heaviest unit in the paper: 111 of 600 PYQs.
1. What is Pollution?
Pollution is any undesirable change in the physical, chemical or biological characteristics of air, water or land that harms living organisms. The substance or form of energy that causes this change is called a pollutant (smoke, sewage, pesticides, plastic, loud sound, heat, radiation — anything that does not belong in that quantity).
Pollution = pollutants added to the environment in harmful quantities. Remember this chain for MCQs: source → pollutant → exposure → effect → control measure. Every question in this unit fits into one of these five links.
Pollutants are classified two ways — learn both, because PYQs test the distinction directly:
Classification
Type
Meaning
Examples
By degradability
Biodegradable
Broken down by microbes naturally
Sewage, paper, food waste
Non-biodegradable
Do not decompose; persist for years
Plastic, DDT, heavy metals (lead, mercury)
By origin in air
Primary pollutants
Emitted directly from a source
CO, SO2, NOx, particulate matter
Secondary pollutants
Formed in the atmosphere by chemical reactions
Ozone (O3), PAN, photochemical smog
PYQ Alert:"Which of the following is a secondary air pollutant?" Answer: ozone / PAN / smog — never CO or SO2 (those are primary, emitted directly).
Fig 5.1 — The seven types of pollution in this unit. For each one, learn the fixed pattern: causes → effects → control measures.
2. Air Pollution
Air pollution is the presence of harmful substances in the air in concentrations above the permissible limit. Sources are of two kinds:
Source type
Examples
Natural
Volcanic eruptions, dust storms, forest fires
Anthropogenic (human-made)
Vehicles, industries, thermal power plants, burning of fossil fuels and crop stubble
Photochemical smog: nitrogen oxides + hydrocarbons + sunlight → ground-level ozone (O3), PAN (peroxyacetyl nitrate) and aldehydes. A brownish haze, also called Los Angeles smog. Sunlight is the essential ingredient — that is what makes it "photochemical".
Effects of air pollution: respiratory diseases (asthma, bronchitis), acid rain (SO2 + NOx + water vapour → sulphuric and nitric acids — damages buildings, crops and soil), reduced visibility, and contribution to global warming.
Control measures: electrostatic precipitators and scrubbers in industries, catalytic converters in vehicles, use of CNG instead of diesel, and strict emission standards enforced by the CPCB.
PYQ Alert:"The Bhopal gas tragedy (1984) was caused by the leakage of which gas?" Answer: methyl isocyanate (MIC) — leaked on the night of 2–3 December 1984 from the Union Carbide pesticide plant, Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh). The worst industrial disaster in history.
Must-know body:CPCB = Central Pollution Control Board — the apex pollution-monitoring body, set up in 1974 under the Water Act, headquartered at New Delhi. It lays down NAAQS (National Ambient Air Quality Standards).
3. Water Pollution
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (rivers, lakes, groundwater) making water unfit for drinking, irrigation or aquatic life. Sources:
Point sources — pollution from one identifiable spot: a factory pipe, a sewage outfall. Easy to locate and control.
Non-point sources — diffused over a large area: agricultural runoff, urban stormwater. Hard to trace and control.
Causes: domestic sewage, industrial effluents (chemicals, heavy metals), agricultural runoff (fertilizers, pesticides), oil spills, and hot-water discharge from power plants.
Water-quality indicator
What it tells you
Dissolved Oxygen (DO)
Low DO = polluted water (aquatic life suffocates)
Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)
High BOD = more organic pollution (microbes consume oxygen to decompose waste)
Coliform count
High count = sewage contamination
Eutrophication: excess nutrients (nitrates, phosphates from fertilizers/sewage) → algal bloom on the surface → sunlight blocked, algae die → decomposition consumes dissolved oxygen → fish die. Biomagnification: non-biodegradable pollutants (DDT, mercury) concentrate at each step up the food chain — top predators get the highest dose.
Effects: waterborne diseases (cholera, typhoid, dysentery, jaundice), death of aquatic life, and contamination of groundwater.
Control measures: sewage treatment plants (STPs), effluent treatment plants (ETPs) in industries, the Ganga Action Plan (1986) for river cleaning, and bans on direct discharge of untreated waste.
PYQ Alert:"Blue Baby Syndrome is caused by excess ___ in drinking water." Answer: nitrates (from fertilizer runoff). Nitrates convert to nitrites in the body, which bind haemoglobin and starve the infant's blood of oxygen — the skin turns bluish. Medical name: methemoglobinemia.
4. Soil Pollution
Soil pollution is the contamination of soil with chemicals that reduce its fertility and poison the food chain.
Causes: excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides/insecticides (like DDT), dumping of industrial waste, plastic waste, mining activities, and soil erosion from deforestation.
Effects: loss of soil fertility, killing of useful soil microbes, biomagnification of pesticides through crops into humans, and contamination of groundwater below.
Control measures: organic farming and judicious (limited) pesticide use, proper disposal of industrial waste, bioremediation (using microbes or plants to clean contaminated soil), and bans on single-use plastic.
5. Marine, Noise and Thermal Pollution
Three more types, compared side by side — this table format is exactly how MCQs test them:
Type
Main causes
Key effects
Control measures
Marine pollution
Oil spills from tankers, plastic waste, sewage and industrial discharge into seas
MARPOL convention (1973/78) against ship pollution, double-hull tankers, ban on ocean dumping
Noise pollution
Traffic, industries, construction, loudspeakers
Hearing loss, hypertension, stress, sleep disturbance. Measured in decibels (dB); prolonged exposure above ~85 dB damages hearing
Silencers, green belts along roads, silence zones near schools and hospitals
Thermal pollution
Hot water discharged by thermal/nuclear power plants and industries
Reduces dissolved oxygen in water; kills or drives away aquatic organisms
Cooling towers and cooling ponds — cool the water before discharge
6. Nuclear Hazards
Nuclear hazards arise from radioactive materials that emit alpha, beta and gamma radiation (gamma is the most penetrating). Sources: nuclear power plants, nuclear weapons testing, uranium mining, and medical/industrial radioactive waste.
Accident
Year
Place
Three Mile Island
1979
USA
Chernobyl (worst ever)
1986
Ukraine (then USSR)
Fukushima
2011
Japan (after a tsunami)
Effects of radiation: cancer, genetic mutations, birth defects, and acute radiation sickness at high doses.
Control measures: strict safety protocols in plants, disposal of nuclear waste in shielded containers buried deep underground, and international safeguards monitored by the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency).
7. Solid Waste Management
Solid waste = discarded solid materials. Two streams:
Urban (municipal) waste — from households and markets: food waste, paper, plastic, glass. Growing with population and consumerism.
Industrial waste — from factories: chemicals, slag, fly ash, and hazardous waste (toxic, flammable). Also e-waste (old electronics) and biomedical waste (hospitals).
Effects of poor disposal: land pollution, groundwater contamination by toxic leachate (liquid oozing from garbage), methane emissions from landfills, and health hazards for ragpickers and nearby residents.
Fig 5.2 — The 4R waste hierarchy: Refuse is the best option, disposal the worst. Treatment methods in between: composting, vermicomposting (earthworms), incineration, and sanitary landfills.
Order matters: Refuse → Reduce → Reuse → Recycle → (treat) → Dispose. MCQs ask "which comes first in the waste hierarchy" — answer is always Refuse.
8. Role of the Individual in Pollution Prevention
Laws and technology are not enough — daily individual choices decide how much pollution is produced:
Use public transport, carpooling or cycling instead of private vehicles.
Segregate waste at home (wet/dry) and compost kitchen waste.
Refuse single-use plastic — carry a cloth bag and a water bottle.
Save electricity and water; switch off appliances; fix leaking taps.
Plant trees and protect existing green cover.
Never burn garbage or dry leaves — it releases toxic smoke.
Report pollution violations and join cleanliness drives.
9. Disaster Management
A disaster is a sudden event causing large-scale damage to life and property. Disaster management = preparedness + response + recovery + mitigation (before, during and after the event).
Disaster
Main causes
Management measures
Flood
Heavy rainfall, deforestation, blocked drains, dam release
Embankments, early-warning systems, afforestation in catchment areas, floodplain zoning
Earthquake
Sudden release of energy along fault lines; measured on the Richter scale
Earthquake-resistant buildings, mock drills, emergency kits, enforcement of building codes
Cyclone
Intense low-pressure systems over warm oceans; high winds + storm surge
Cyclone shelters, mangrove belts along coasts, early warning and evacuation
Landslide
Deforestation, mining, road-cutting on slopes, heavy rain
Afforestation, retaining walls, proper slope drainage, avoiding construction on unstable slopes
Must-know body:NDMA = National Disaster Management Authority — the apex body for disaster management in India, headed by the Prime Minister. (Set up under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.)
10. Exam Tips — Unit 5
From PYQ analysis (6 papers, 111 Unit-5 questions — the second-heaviest unit):
Bhopal gas tragedy:MIC gas, night of 2–3 December 1984, Union Carbide, Bhopal. Asked almost every year in some form.
Blue Baby Syndrome = excess nitrates in drinking water (methemoglobinemia).
Secondary pollutants = ozone, PAN, photochemical smog — formed in the atmosphere, not emitted directly. Primary = CO, SO2, NOx.
Photochemical smog components: ozone + PAN + aldehydes; needs sunlight.
CPCB: 1974, under the Water Act, HQ New Delhi, sets NAAQS.
Water indicators: high BOD = polluted; low DO = polluted. Don't reverse them.
Noise is measured in decibels (dB); Chernobyl = 1986.
Trap to avoid: tall chimneys only disperse pollutants — they don't reduce pollution. And thermal pollution reduces dissolved oxygen (hot water holds less oxygen).
11. Key Points — Revise in 2 Minutes
Pollutant types: biodegradable vs non-biodegradable; primary (CO, SO2, NOx) vs secondary (ozone, PAN, smog).
Disasters: flood, earthquake (Richter scale), cyclone, landslide; NDMA headed by the Prime Minister.
