Unit 6 in 30 seconds: This unit connects computers to commerce and law. It covers E-Commerce (buying and selling online), its categories (B2B, B2C, C2C, C2B), E-Governance, EDI, electronic payment systems (UPI, cards, net banking), digital signatures, computer ethics, cyber crimes, and the IT Act 2000 (sections 43, 66, 66C, 66D, 67), plus software piracy, intellectual property rights and social engineering.
1. What is E-Commerce?
E-Commerce (Electronic Commerce) is the buying and selling of goods and services, and the transfer of money and data, over electronic networks — mainly the Internet.
E-Commerce = business transactions conducted online — ordering on Amazon, booking tickets on IRCTC, paying bills with UPI, or a company placing bulk orders on a supplier's website.
E-commerce covers three stages of a business deal:
Pre-sales — searching, comparing and advertising products online.
Sales — placing the order and making payment.
Post-sales — delivery tracking, customer support and returns.
Exam Tip: Favourite MCQ — "E-Commerce refers to ___" → buying and selling of goods and services over the Internet. Also remember the pairs: B2B = IndiaMART/Alibaba, B2C = Amazon/Flipkart, C2C = OLX/eBay, C2B = Upwork/freelancing.

3. Benefits and Growth of E-Commerce
Benefits for customers:
Convenience — shop from home, 24 × 7.
More choice — thousands of products and easy price comparison.
Lower prices — fewer middlemen, so cheaper products.
Detailed information — reviews, ratings and specifications before buying.
Benefits for businesses:
Global market — reach customers in every country.
Lower cost — no shop rent; inventory can be centralised.
Better data — track customer behaviour and personalise offers.
Faster transactions — instant payment and digital records.
Growth facts (exam favourites): Amazon was founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos as an online bookstore. In India, e-ticketing took off after IRCTC launched online train booking in 2002. India's e-commerce boom was accelerated by smartphone growth, cheap data and UPI payments.
4. E-Commerce Categories
E-commerce is classified by who is selling and who is buying:

Digital India (launched 2015) is India's flagship programme for e-governance. DigiLocker provides digital copies of documents (Aadhaar, driving licence) that are legally valid. UMANG app gives access to many government services from one app.
6. EDI — Electronic Data Interchange
EDI is the computer-to-computer exchange of business documents (purchase orders, invoices, shipping notices) in a standard electronic format — with no human intervention and no paper.
Key point: EDI replaces paper documents like purchase orders and invoices with structured electronic messages using international standards such as EDIFACT (UN standard) and ANSI X12 (US standard).
Benefits of EDI:
Faster document exchange (minutes instead of days).
Fewer errors — no manual re-typing of data.
Lower paper, printing and postage costs.
Automatic processing by the receiving computer system.
7. Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) on EDI Networks
Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) is the transfer of money from one bank account to another electronically, without paper cheques or cash. When combined with EDI networks, a business can order goods AND pay for them in one electronic flow — documents by EDI, money by EFT.
Indian EFT systems (all run by NPCI/RBI networks):
NEFT (National Electronic Funds Transfer) — transfers settled in batches, available 24 × 7 since December 2019.
IMPS (Immediate Payment Service) — instant 24 × 7 transfer, works even on basic phones.
Remember: Common MCQ trap — RTGS minimum = 2 lakh and settlement is real-time; NEFT is settled in batches with no minimum limit. IMPS works on mobile phones 24 × 7.
8. Electronic Payment System
An Electronic Payment System is any system that allows payment for goods and services over the Internet or electronic networks. Main methods:
Method
How it works
Key point
Credit Card
Bank lends you money; you pay later
"Buy now, pay later" — interest on delay
Debit Card
Money debited directly from your bank account
Pay from your own balance — no borrowing
Net Banking
Transfer through the bank's website/app
Needs Internet banking login + OTP
UPI
Instant transfer using a virtual payment address
Launched 2016 by NPCI; works 24 × 7
E-Wallets
Pre-loaded digital wallet
Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay
COD
Cash on Delivery — pay when goods arrive
Not fully electronic, but part of e-commerce
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) was launched in 2016 by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India). It uses a VPA (Virtual Payment Address) like name@upi — you never share your bank account number.
Fig 6.1 — Steps of a typical online payment: customer pays → payment gateway encrypts → bank verifies with OTP → seller receives money.
9. Digital Signature
A digital signature is an electronic method of signing a document that proves who sent it (authentication) and that it was not changed (integrity).
How it works: Digital signatures use asymmetric cryptography — a private key (known only to the signer, used to sign) and a public key (shared with everyone, used to verify). In India, digital signatures are legally valid under the IT Act 2000 (Section 3).
Authentication — confirms the identity of the sender.
Integrity — any change in the document breaks the signature.
Non-repudiation — the signer cannot later deny signing.
10. Computer Ethics
Computer ethics is the set of moral rules for using computers and the Internet responsibly — respecting others' privacy, property and work online.
The Computer Ethics Institute (1992) gave the famous "Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics":
Thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people.
Thou shalt not interfere with other people's computer work.
Thou shalt not snoop around in other people's computer files.
Thou shalt not use a computer to steal.
Thou shalt not use a computer to bear false witness (spread lies).
Thou shalt not copy or use proprietary software for which you have not paid.
Thou shalt not use other people's computer resources without authorisation.
Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output.
Thou shalt think about the social consequences of the program you write.
Thou shalt use a computer in ways that show consideration and respect for others.
Exam Tip: If a question asks "Who gave the Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics?" → Computer Ethics Institute (1992). If it asks "Using software without paying is against ___" → commandment 6.
11. Cyber Crime
Cyber crime is any crime committed using a computer or the Internet as a tool or target.
Cyber Crime
Meaning
Hacking
Unauthorised access to a computer system
Phishing
Fake emails/websites that steal passwords and bank details
Identity theft
Stealing someone's personal data to commit fraud in their name
Repeatedly harassing or threatening someone online
Denial of Service (DoS)
Flooding a website so genuine users cannot access it
Child abuse (online)
Exploiting children through the Internet — severely punished under Section 67B
Phishing vs Hacking:Hacking breaks into systems with technical skill; phishing tricks people into giving away their own passwords (fake bank emails, fake login pages). Remember — phishing = "fishing" for passwords.
12. IT Act 2000 — Key Sections
The Information Technology Act, 2000 is India's main law for cyber crime and electronic commerce. It came into force on 17 October 2000 and is based on the UNCITRAL Model Law (1996) on electronic commerce.
Section
Offence
Punishment
Section 43
Penalty for damage to a computer system (unauthorised access, data theft, virus)
Offensive messages online — STRUCK DOWN by Supreme Court in Shreya Singhal v. Union of India (2015)
No longer valid
Section 66C
Identity theft — using another person's password/digital signature
Up to 3 years jail + fine
Section 66D
Cheating by personation using a computer (fake profiles, online fraud)
Up to 3 years jail + fine
Section 66F
Cyber terrorism
Life imprisonment
Section 67
Publishing obscene material online
Up to 3 years (first conviction)
Section 67B
Child pornography / sexually explicit acts involving children
Up to 5 years (first conviction)
Section 72
Breach of confidentiality and privacy by an authorised person
Up to 2 years jail + fine
PYQ Alert: Two facts are asked again and again — Section 66A was struck down in 2015 (Shreya Singhal case), and the IT Act came into force on 17 October 2000. Learn the 66-series: 66C = identity theft, 66D = cheating by personation, 66F = cyber terrorism.
13. Software Piracy
Software piracy is the illegal copying, distribution or use of software without the permission of the copyright holder — for example, installing one licensed copy on many computers, or downloading cracked software.
Exam point: In India, software is protected as a "literary work" under the Copyright Act, 1957. Piracy is punishable under the Copyright Act (Section 63) and can also attract action under the IT Act (Sections 43/66) for unauthorised copying.
Common forms of piracy:
Softlifting — using one licensed copy on multiple machines.
Counterfeiting — selling fake/illegal copies as genuine.
Internet piracy — downloading cracked software or keygens.
Hard-disk loading — shops pre-installing pirated software on new PCs.
14. Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)
Intellectual Property = legal rights over creations of the mind — inventions, writings, designs, brand names. Three main types for this unit:
Right
Protects
Example
Duration (India)
Copyright
Original creative works — books, music, films, software
A novel, a Windows program
Life of author + 60 years
Patent
New inventions (must be novel and useful)
A new medicine, a machine design
20 years from filing
Trademark
Brand identifiers — names, logos, slogans
Nike tick, "Coca-Cola" name
10 years, renewable forever
Quick memory trick:Copyright = creation (a song), Patent = invention (a machine), Trademark = brand mark (a logo). Software gets copyright, not patent, in India.
15. Social Engineering
Social engineering is the art of manipulating people into revealing confidential information (passwords, OTPs, bank details) — attacking the human, not the computer.
Pretexting — inventing a false story ("I am calling from your bank") to get details.
Baiting — offering something attractive (free movie download) hiding malware.
Tailgating — following an authorised person into a restricted area.
Vishing/Smishing — voice-call or SMS phishing ("your account is blocked, share the OTP").
Golden rule (exam + life): Banks never ask for OTP, PIN or CVV on calls or SMS. Sharing an OTP with a caller = classic social engineering attack. The best defence is awareness — technology cannot stop a tricked human.

IndiaMART, Alibaba (थोक)
B2C

Upwork, Fiverr

UPI
Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay
COD
