Unit 3 in 30 seconds: An Operating System (OS) is system software that manages hardware and lets users run programs. Its main functions are process, memory, file, device management and security. Types: Batch, Single User, Multiprocessing, Time Sharing (plus Multiprogramming, Real-Time, Distributed). Windows is a GUI-based single-user/multitasking OS by Microsoft; Linux is an open-source Unix-like OS built around the kernel and shell.
1. What is an Operating System?
An Operating System (OS) is a system software that acts as an interface between the user and the computer hardware. No application program (MS Word, browser, games) can run without an OS. It controls and coordinates all hardware and software resources.
An OS can be seen in two ways:
Resource manager: decides who gets the CPU, memory and devices, and for how long.
Extended machine: hides the complex hardware details and gives the user a simple, convenient way to use the computer (icons, menus, commands).
PYQ Alert: "Which software acts as an interface between user and hardware?" — Answer is the Operating System, not application software. A favourite 1-mark question.
Fig 3.1 — Layered view: the OS sits between applications and hardware
2. Need and Functions of an Operating System
An OS is needed because hardware alone cannot be used directly by users or programs. Its main functions are:
Function
What the OS does
Process management
Creates, schedules and terminates processes; allocates CPU time; handles multitasking and deadlock.
Memory management
Allocates RAM to programs, keeps track of free and used memory, handles virtual memory and swapping.
File management
Organises data into files and folders (directories), controls file creation, deletion, naming and access permissions.
Device management
Controls input/output devices through device drivers; manages printing (spooling), buffering.
Security management
Protects data with user accounts, passwords and access rights; prevents unauthorised access.
User interface
Provides a way to interact with the computer — CLI (Command Line Interface, e.g. MS-DOS) or GUI (Graphical User Interface, e.g. Windows).
Error detection
Detects hardware/software faults and produces error messages and recovery actions.
3. Types of Operating Systems
3.1 Batch Operating System
In a batch OS, similar jobs are collected into batches and executed one after another without user interaction. The user prepares the job offline and the operator runs the whole batch. There is no direct interaction between the user and the computer while jobs run. Example: early mainframe systems using punch cards.
3.2 Single-User Operating System
A single-user OS allows only one user at a time on the machine. It may still run multiple programs (multitasking). Examples: MS-DOS (single tasking), Windows (single user, multitasking).
3.3 Multiprocessing Operating System
A multiprocessing OS uses two or more CPUs in one computer to execute programs in parallel. It increases speed, reliability (if one CPU fails, work continues) and throughput. Example: Unix.
Do not confuse:Multiprogramming = many programs in memory sharing one CPU; Multiprocessing = many programs running on many CPUs; Multitasking = one user running many programs by fast switching.
3.4 Time-Sharing Operating System
In a time-sharing OS, the CPU time is divided into small slices (time quantum) and given to each user in turn, so fast switching makes every user feel they have the machine to themselves. Multiple users work at the same time through terminals. Example: Unix, Multics.
3.5 Other important types
Multiprogramming OS: keeps several programs in main memory at once; when one waits for I/O, the CPU switches to another. Improves CPU utilisation.
Real-Time OS (RTOS): responds to input within a strict time limit. Used in aircraft control, missile systems, industrial robots. Example: VxWorks.
Distributed OS: runs on many computers connected over a network, appearing as one single system to the user.
Mobile/Network OS:Android, iOS (mobile); network OS manages servers and shared resources on a LAN.

Windows (Microsoft) — GUI-based, most popular desktop OS (Windows 10, Windows 11).
Unix (1969, Bell Labs) — multi-user, multitasking; base of many later systems.
Linux (1991, Linus Torvalds) — free and open-source Unix-like OS.
Android — Linux-based mobile OS by Google.
macOS / iOS — Apple's operating systems.
6. Introduction to Windows
Microsoft Windows is a GUI-based, single-user, multitasking operating system. The first version (Windows 1.0) was released in 1985; modern versions include Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Main GUI elements of the Windows desktop
Desktop: the main screen area; holds icons, files and folders.
Icons: small pictures representing files, folders and programs (e.g. Recycle Bin).
Taskbar: the bar at the bottom showing the Start button, open programs and the system tray (clock, volume, network).
Start menu: gives access to all programs, settings and power options.
Window: a rectangular area for each program, with title bar, menu bar, minimize/maximize/close buttons.
File Explorer
File Explorer (earlier called Windows Explorer) is used to browse, create, copy, move, rename and delete files and folders. Files are organised in a hierarchy of drives (C:, D:) → folders → sub-folders.
Control Panel / Settings
The Control Panel (now mostly Settings in Windows 10/11) is used to configure the system: user accounts, display, network, printers, programs (install/uninstall), date and time.
PYQ Alert: "GUI" stands for Graphical User Interface. The heart of any computer system question set is: OS = system software = interface between user and hardware.
7. Basics of Linux
Linux is a free and open-source, Unix-like operating system created by Linus Torvalds in 1991. It is multi-user and multitasking, and runs on servers, desktops, Android phones and supercomputers.
Kernel: the core of Linux; manages CPU, memory and devices directly.
Shell: the command interpreter between the user and the kernel (like the CLI of Linux).
Distributions (distros): packaged versions of Linux — Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian.
Open source: the source code is freely available; anyone can study, modify and distribute it.
Quick revision — Unit 3: OS = interface + resource manager. Functions: process, memory, file, device, security, UI. Batch = grouped jobs, no interaction. Single user = MS-DOS/Windows. Multiprocessing = many CPUs. Time sharing = CPU time slices. GUI = Graphical User Interface. Windows = Microsoft, GUI, 1985. Linux = 1991, Linus Torvalds, open source, kernel + shell.

Unix (1969, Bell Labs) —
6. Windows
7. Linux
GUI = Graphical User Interface। Windows = Microsoft, GUI, 1985।
